Yeppers, this one is pretty accurate but you're probably going to need a tool from Napa or some other auto parts store to hold the pulley in place when you go to break the nut for the fan loose. It's a PITA so rent the tool, it's worth it and will save you a TON of trouble.
no problem. Glad I could help, let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
Also, keep in mind that it is best to go OEM on these pumps as the aftermarket doesn't seem to hold up. Don't go to the stealership though.
The guy at powerstrokehelp did have one good idea, if you have an air chisel put it on the nut tilted towards whatever direction it loosens, then buzz it a couple times with it to loosen, a lot easier, and some DONT come with backwards threads, I know, mine didn't.
I just replaced my water pump with a Napa pump 2 weeks ago. I bought a chain wrench and wrapped it around the pully. I used a pipe wrench on the fan nut and a 3 feet long pipe on it. Held some pressure on the pipe wrench, counter clockwise when facing the pump from the front, and smacked it with a hammer. It loosened right smart like.
It was harder to start the nut when replacing the fan - getting the threads lined up while holding the fan in place seemed to take for ever and my arm started to get tired. But really was only a minute or so.
I have learned a lot from this forum. it is priceless, to say the least, and the following videos on you tube:
As far as the removal direction of the nut goes, remember this. It loosens by turning it the same direction as the engine rotates when running. That way the nut will not loosen on it's own. The acceleration of the running engine turns INTO the nut and tightens it rather than loosens it.
The fan nut on a 7.3 is the standard righty tighty, lefty loosey.
I borrow the tools from Autozone. I get two different kits. I use the pulley holding wrench from kit 27018 and the fan wrench from kit 27141. The pulley holding wrenches in kit 27141 totally suck. The pulley holding wrench in kit 27018 works like a charm. Ask for both kits and hope they have them.
I get the two tools on the fan nut and pulley at an angle that allows me to squeeze them like the handles on a pair of pliers and the fan nut pops loose.
