1990 Ranger 2.9 waterpump

Hi all, have a 1990 ranger 4x4 supercab 2.9 V6 5spd that I am fixing up for my daughter.Waterpump gave out, any tips for replacement, do any of the bolts go into any of the waterjackets that may be corroded and might break off? Truck has 325,000 kms on it, not sure if it is oem pump or not. Thanks for any and all help.

I have never changed a water pump on a 2.9, but I sugest you avoid at all cost letting the 2.9 overheat. They are really bad for cracked heads. However, other than that, there a very solid power plant. How many miles is on it, you have to speak the kings english to us hillybillys south of the great lakes as alot of us are not well versed in the metric system he he!!!

i just did one in my bronco 2,the hardest thing is getting the fan clutch off, which is more than likely reverse thread if it was like mine, and a couple of the bottom bolts you cant see at all and you have to just stick your hand down there and feel them.other than that its pretty straight forward.nothing a 10mm socket and a couple of hours cant fix.

I'd forgotten about that big nut! My 2.9L's could probably have done with water pumps, but the heads cracked FAST. Anyway, for that clutch fan nut, it's something like a 1-3/8. I found a special wrench at a used tool shop that has square 3/8 drive ratchet holes for extended reach & torque. My OEM fan on my last engine was ready to explode & dabbled with an efan but picked too low a quality of control, so found a NOS oem fan on ebay really cheap from New York. Exactly my unusual oem, as it was a milder small unit for stripped model. So I'd also suggest inspecting the blades for cracks or other flaws. That thing has to spin a lot faster than a household appliance with good balance.
