Trans rebuild - oooops

I rebuilt a friends trans back in septemember, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-progress.html, and he just now got around to buying a TC so I put it in the truck yesterday. Poured in the fluid, dropped it in gear and it slowly started to move, reverse was better than drive. I figured it would take a few minutes to work out the air but after letting it run for about 10 min it still didnt want to move very well. OH GREAT, now I gotta pull it back out and find what I did wrong. He shows up and after discussing it for a few I mentioned that the pan bolts were all loose and he said "did you ever put a filter in it". Well no, I didnt! He didnt bring me one when he brought the other parts and I have trouble remembering my name let alone what I did last september. Slapped a filter in it she is good to go. What a relief that was. I did the tugger kit on this one and I liked how it shifted stock (he dont have a tuner) think I may go this route when I do mine.

Forgive the silly question but I've never owned or played with an automatic:

Why would the lack of a filter slow the transmission flow?

The filter goes directly into the pump, so it wasnt pulling enough fluid to fully engage the clutch packs.

The filter is basically the pickup foot for the pump.

It happens to the best sometimes. And I like that TG kit too -- it sure seems to have helped my trans live through the abuse I've been handing it. LOL

Yes Rick, a BIG relief.
Actually he is the one who forgot the filter. He was supposed to put one in it and he was gonna put it in himself but he was strapped for time this past weekend and wanted me to install it.

I'm just wondering how it will work with the tunes or will they need to be adjusted. Guess I need to ask Jody about that.
