Ok guys, here goes. I started this last week and hopefully will have the parts by wednesday to start the reassembly. It came from a shop with a fleet of trucks and has been sitting around and the guy couldnt remember what went wrong or why they changed it. Looks as if the pump failed and probably lost pressure. The only clutches that were burnt was the forward drum and they werent all that bad. I'll try to have more detailed pics as I put it back together. It will be getting all new clutches and steels, torque converter and trans-go tugger kit. I'm building this one for someone else but hopefully I'll be getting the one that this one replaces so I can take my time and build it with all the upgraded goodies for my truck.

Thanks to Roland for the last two pics. They came out of his tranny.
I only posted them for reference, this tranny did not have them.
Nice job on the pics. Looks like a good rebuildable trans, Darrell. What kit (clutches) are y'all going with? Are you installing a new or rebuilt pump?
The last 2 pics, I sent Darrell, are of the top and bottom sides of the mechanical diode. It is an assembled ratchet-type one way clutch. The sprag-type is in separate pieces and uses a different drum. The rollers ride directly on the the end of the direct drum. Here is a pic of the 2 from my ATSG manual (bottom one is the mechanical diode):
I've rebuilt lots of Nissan trannies. Its all relative once you get inside. Just had never been into a 4R100 until now. This one is practice for when I do mine. The one that this one is replacing has a broken snap ring laying in the pan and is still in the truck being driven. I hope that it hasn't damaged the case because this one may be mine.

Can you tell, by taking this one apart, which snap ring may be broken in the other trans?

Roland, he said that he was probably getting a kit from Ford, if not I'm not sure what he will get. I showed kim the kt with the extra clutches in it but he didnt seem interested. His money, not mine. For sure a new pump.
When I do mine it'll get the updated center support and coast drum from Suncoast.
Did you do the tugger kit on yours Roland? If so did you do the pump mods?
I used that same ASTG manual when I re-did a buddy of mines 4r and even when I took that page in to the Ford "techs" they had no idea what the mech diode was or what parts needed to be replaced. Had to track them down and now I keep the parts numbers just in case.

I used the the E4OD-HD2-D TransGo kit, which is similar. I did the pump mods, as well. They were included in that kit.
I also used a .427 diameter line pressure modulator valve, in the accumulator VB instead of adding the spring to the stock modulator valve. I had one in my previous shift kit for the accumulator VB and like the way it worked. I believe others just used the spring with good results.

I hear ya'. I asked a few trans rebuilders about selective snap rings and got this for an answer.
The guy that I'm building this for is my Snap-On guy, thats used to work for Ford and has rebuilt these before, and he didnt know what I was talking about either. He said they just ordered stuff off of the engineering # on the tag.
I know when I rebuilt the one I did, I was very meticulous on the torque specs. Then I go to BTS last friday and the only thing they used a torque wrench on is the feed bolts
