I have over 40,000 miles of towing under my belt, About 500 with a 460, and few hundred with a 5.4 and a few hundred with a 7.3 PSD. All the rest are with my V10.
I have been scaled at 22,600 before with the V10 and it was a little sluggish, but it never lost speed on a hill.
I got the 7.3 IDI hoping for better fuel mileage, but I am not sure about the loss of power over the v10.
This will be the least powerful thing I have towed with by far.
Just have to wait and see once it is on the road
my 5.4 amazed me. the auto was good and well cooled. it did however keep up with my buds truck with the v-10 and when i had to use his to tow my crawler, i saw the good and bad of the two. now that i tow with a 7.3idi i can see more differenses. they all have their goods and bads.
v-10= worst milage and equal to the 5.4 towing(my experiance)
5.4=10 mpg towing. great get up an go, but, you will be behind the idi on the hills.
7.3 idi N/A= will tow anything (in no hurry) doesn't move off the line like the 5.4 or v=10 but doesn't lag down as much as the gassers. i also got 14mpg with a 6000lb trailer

This is our first pickup and diesel. It runs good when just people are inside it. And on mild grades the truck was able to pull better in 2nd gear. On the highway it takes some time but the truck will get up to 70mph without screaming and it seems happy.
This is with truck in sig, the soup bowl cutout.
And with 3 adults in the cab, 2-500 pound sport bikes in the bed along with a spare tire and 200 pounds in tools. And a 5,500 pound 24' hitch travel trailer attached.
We got it for cheap and have already put time and effort into fixing all the little things so we aren't planning on costly upgrades, but I guess that goes to show that you need to know what you are getting yourself into when it comes to towing.
something has to be wrong, i am towing with 4.10 gears an 38.5" tires and on't have that prob.

Me thinks the old IDI is going to need boost to get er done with the big trailer. I imagine that the little 16 foot open traier and the 2300lb GTI will be just fine with the N/A idi.

your effective/actual gear ratio is now 3.38:1
not going to get off the line very well while towing in general.
Hah I told you it was too hot down there My son just called from houston. He said it snowed down there and wanted to know how you turned on the heater in my 5th wheel. He has been there since christmas and hadn't needed the heater till now. too hot. lol

The V10 will always out tow the 5.4.
The V10 is a 5.4 with 2 more cylinders.
One thing you have to realize is that the V10/5.4 were made with 3 different heads and 2 different auto tranys over the years.
The 97-99 had NPI heads and 4R100.
The 00-04 had PI heads and 4R100.
The 05-10 got the 3V heads and the 5R110.
If the 5.4 towed as well as the V10 you must be comparing an older V10 to a 3V 5.4.
Compare them apples to apples and the V10 will trash the 5.4 in every way.
Totally agree with that. My neighbors called the city ordinance inspector on me. I had to move 3 trucks out of here or they were going to fine me a thousand bucks a day!
Now in the middle of the night I go outside and p in the middle of the street.

I had that same thing happen and I live out in the country.
The problem there is you can cheat with a manual and can't with an auto. And I don't buy into the way ford rated them they were just not wanting to have to be wuarrantying a bunch of driveline components. lol It is rare you see an auto in a semi.

Army trucks 30 years old with 10,000 miles on them pretty regular. A commercial truck 10 years old will have 1,500,000 on it.
Lots of difference here. The reason the military vehicles are auto is because they have to be because of who will be driving them.
I am proud of our military, every branch, but have loaded and unloaded many times that the people driving automatic humvees on or off of my trailer has to try several times, something any of my hids could do by the time they were 8 years old.
