I love the truck either way, but I may just use the flat bed for hauling and leave all the heavy towing for the V10. I will have to try some towing with the IDI and see how it goes.
Yes sir dirty truck is a texas ticket and so is anything else you can imagine if you get stopped by a diesel god. I have even seen them borrow a tire guage and then give a ticket for a tire only haveing 80 pounds in it. lol
I have never used a v10 ford and have no doubt it will out do an idi for awhile, I don't think it will be there for the long haul if worked hard every day.
It has 170,000 on it now, we will just have to wait and see.
400,000 and 500,000 mile V10s are fairly common and I think mine could make that, even if its all towing.
Whats the highest miles IDI on the site? I have never paid attention to that before.
In your part of the country flat with rolling hills that idi should do a decent job of holding it's own with a load after you get up to speed. Are your loads a big wind catcher or they fairly low.

Most are fairly low, but when I haul appliances I can end up with a load the is 13' tall and 8' wide.
Most of my towing is hauling scrap, which can be some really random shapes.
I didn't realise they were getting that kind of mileage with the V10's, but I don't know much about them and they are pretty much non existant in this part of the country.
It's been my experiange that a bad wind load pulls harder than a lot of weight.

I have heard that only 5% of superdutys were sold with it, its not very common.
Most of the guys that have them love them, kinda like the IDIs.
I agree on the wind, I get 7.5 MPG towing 4,000lb of washing machines stacked up and I can get close to 10 MPG towing a 9K back hoe that catches much less air.
We have made a couple trips with some average grades and our truck will scream in 1st gear, or shift into second then it falls flat on its face and hovers there or drops back into 1st again. That is the worst of it thus far. The truck seems kind of gutless to me, but I am happy with our setup due to savings cost and with the hope that we will just eventually get their
This is our first pickup and diesel. It runs good when just people are inside it. And on mild grades the truck was able to pull better in 2nd gear. On the highway it takes some time but the truck will get up to 70mph without screaming and it seems happy.
This is with truck in sig, the soup bowl cutout.
And with 3 adults in the cab, 2-500 pound sport bikes in the bed along with a spare tire and 200 pounds in tools. And a 5,500 pound 24' hitch travel trailer attached.
We got it for cheap and have already put time and effort into fixing all the little things so we aren't planning on costly upgrades, but I guess that goes to show that you need to know what you are getting yourself into when it comes to towing.
Something ain't right damac I don't know of a grade on any main highway in the western us or even the canadian rockies that would get me down to 1st gear at all.
