Just for the record , my 2002 Excursion PSD with 15,000 miles does the same violent loaping thing when i try to start it when it has not been plugged in overnite. It usually takes two or three tries before the truck will actually want to idle. Seems to only do this when the temp is under 20 ......
Can anyone tell me where to buy 10W-30 Approved for diesels?
I have the problem with loping, the local Ford dealer doesn't have it and the guy at Auto-Zone says there is no such animal.

my truck has done the same thing since it was new 40,000 miles on it here in chilly michigan I have always just touched the gas pedal and it stops I just figured it was part of the deal with the truck.
I have a 2001 with same condition. However around 30k, my truck ran rough even after warm up. It would cough, sputter, and die frequently. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the cam timing senser. The tech told me this is a common problem, as is the loaping on startup. Since then it loaps once, maybe twice (not nearly as violent as before) then clears up. I use shell rotella 15-40 year round.
