Metal, sorry if I offended your intelect. On the contrary I'm 11 years senior of 25. I have been doing this for a proffesion for about 18 years. I have worked for a Ford dealer for the last 10 years. So yes, maybe I missed your/the point, but I do have a clue as to whats going on,and can get the inside scoop before most ppl can. I heard from a reliable source that Navistar puts 10w30 in the engines that gets delivered to Ford because they don't know if they are going to Alaska or Florida. Respect, Metalbender.

every day, but i am a parts manager so i hit the parts board to see what the new thing to cry about each day. every once in awhile i will learn something. i am a ford man so i try to help when i can, sometines i do learn a little here also.
i see you have modified your truck alot. how does your dealership handle trucks under warrenty with all those modifications? i always leave mine bone stock so to keep the peace. good thing they preform good out of the box.
I have a friend that has a 95 PSD that does the exact same thing on cold start up. If the truck is plugged in it will idle smooth on cold
start up.If I owned a diesel it would be plugged in if the temp was
going to be below freezing, its hard on a diesel to crank it when its cold.
Mine does it too. My guess is the electric accelerator. I think its much harder than it used to be when Ford used the cable accelerator.
We have some 01's that don't do this but they also have the cute little idle control box on them too.
psd tech, where have I seen that name before? I thought I've seen the name on a different site. but theres probably no relation.

Wolfmanagh, I've created that user id for this message board (FTE). I have paticipated in other websites/message boards under different names. I choose to keep it that way because I work for a Ford Dealer and sometimes what I type may not always be in Fords best interest, but as I said before I try to stick with the truth without divulging the trade secrets of Ford. When it is my opinion, I will state that "it is my opinion". I will not "bash" Ford though, if I have "constructive critizism", I will post that the Ford site. (unavailable to the public) This is a great site for us! Keep up the good work to all involved. Have a Great Day!
Thats kinda what I thought. I've been to some other sites myself, and I goto another quite often. I just thought I've seen the name before. Oh ya I do spend more time here, cause I get a better response when I ask something, One of the other sites its filled with a lot of them beefed up rangers. (F150's)
I don't know if this is any help or not, but I have a 2003 6.0L and it has a cold start loaping problem. I don't know how many parts the 7.3 and 6.0 have in comon, but my 6.0 had a severe loaping problem when cold and now it's happening at any temp. I have it in the garage now and the thought is that the ICP is bad. This module controls injector pressure.
1943GPW, There are several causes for the lope on your 6.0. I would take it back to the dealer. The trucks built after 2/4/03 are supposed to have the latest release ICP with a DA suffix. There is a way to test, but you need Fords diag equipoment. There are also PCM/FICM/TCM computer reflashes, and a new reflash to be released on or about 3/3/03. Hope that helps.
I only have 80 miles on it since the new DA ICP and a reflash of three things. Unfortunately I do not have the service order, so I can not say what three things were reflashed. One was the PCM. Also they located an air leak somewhere in the intake. Idle is much better however when cold there is some (a little) surging, but very minor at this time. It seems as though the have increased the idle some when cold, and that would eliminate some of the romp romp. Mileage is up considerably. I would say back to what it was when new.
ICP and reflash seem to be the ticket for my symptoms of romping when cold and warm, stalling and poor mileage.
1943GPW (Mark), the three things are the PCM (powertrain controll module, TCM (trans controll module) & the FICM ( fuel injection controll module. Hope that your still running good. Yes Ford does have some problems with the early 6.0, they are having roudtable discussions with the engineers, parts suppliers, and us techs in the field every week or two. They are amazing engines when they are right. Good Luck!
