have only seen this on 2001 powerstrokes. when you start them cold the loap very violently and will not idel. this has only started hapening since it has become very cold here, around 10 degrees. change the 15w40 to 10w30 and the problem is gone. the wierd thing is in only does it on 2001 trucks. anybody know why or haveing this problem?
My 01 F250 does the same thing when its cold and was not plugged in. Does the loping thing maybe 2-3x, then idles normally. If I had the block heater on for at least a couple of hours, it will not do this. I am still running 15W-40.

If it were the glow-plugs, how would you check?
Curious.

I know that the power meter on my truck goes way down to the left when my glow plugs are active. If your meter doesn't move much or at all, the glow plugs are not active. I'm sure someone else on the board could give you the diagnostic test to check each individual glow plug to see which ones aren't working. If you take apart the engine to replace a couple of glow plugs you might as well replace them all anyway.
I'm surprised to hear how rough some of you guys say your 99+ power strokes run in the cold. I do usually plug my truck in when it gets cold, but a few times this winter when it's been down to a low of -9 I've had no problem when it hasn't been plugged in. I thought the injectors in the newer power strokes were supposed to make cold starts easier, along with the other benefits.
this problem is not in the glow plug system, we have already checked them. hook them to the computer no problem found. nothing can be found out of the ordinary. called ford they know they have a problem but do not have a "fix" yet. thought maybe someone could shed some light on why it is only 2001's with this. joe? anybody?

spartamouse1, Howdy, long time lurker first time poster. I have a 99 PSD that does the same thing, the only differance is mine will loap on startup at around 35-40 degrees. I kind of figured that the injectors that need oil pressure to function properly are not getting what they need right away. and after a couple of seconds the oil pump is finally able to supply enough pressure and volume for the injectors to operate properly. of course I may be completly wrong but its just my .02.
yes they lope ive seen the engines do that at start up in the summer also. as far as glow plugs go watch your charge gauge its your best non intrusive indicator of glow plug operation
i have a 99.5 and it does the same thing, the lope.
Here in PA it has been like 1,2,3,4 degrees farenheit at night, and i have no way to plug it in.
When i start it, after i cycle the glow plugs 2 times. It lopes for maybe 15 secondws and then goes to a normal and then high idle.
I thought it might be the glow plugs, but wanted to check on here.
I am using 15-w40 oil.
Does anyone know of a website where i can find a step by step instruction on how to check and or change the glow plugs?
(even if the lope is nothing to do with the plugs, i figure it is something i should check since i bough the truck used and it's previuous life is somewhat a mystery)
Get an ammeter that clips over the battery cable and clip it onto the heavy cable that comes off the glow plug realy. The glow plugs draw about 40 amps each (times 8 is 320 amps). while you are watching the meter, have someone turn the key on and read the meter. If the relay is not working, the amperage draw will be negligible. (The relay may still "click" on but that doesn't mean it is delivering power to the glow plug system.)
As described by The Diesel Dude (posting guru) from a previous thread.
I did a search with "glow plugs " as the key word.
First off I have a 01 F350SD with a ps and i love it ,51k miles and this is my first problem. the temps.been between 15 and -5 here for a couple of days i plug it in every nite.last nite went to go to the store it started sputtering terribly and then cut off. let it sit for bout ten minutes got it started turned around and headed homeit did this one more time let it sit for a time it started right up and made it home and plugged it in.this morning it started right up no problem drop my kids off at school it started sputtering again and shut off.it cranks over very hard and doesnt want to start.this is my first diesel and the first really cold witer with it could it be the fuel gelling or something major?
