99 Expedition Windshield must replace Is it True

Called the local Autoglass repair center to ask if they'd fix my 99 Expedition windshield leak. He said that they would ONLY replace the ENTIRE windshield.

The reason: he said that this year (and 2000) has a windshield that has a coating (black) around the edges that is the source of the leak. He said the ceramic separates from the glass and that a simple reseal would not cure the problem.

Truth or fiction?

I think it was just last week that someone said that same thing here, or was that you?

I've heard that before. I've also heard of people having luck with Silly-Cone under the weatherstrip. I'd make sure I had glass replacement coverage and drive behind a gravel truck.

Check with another glass place and see what they say.

What he said!

It is not too hard to reseal the bottom and sides of your windshield as a temorary fix but the glass should really come out to do it right. Most likely they told you that because they usually break the glass when trying to remove it or it just takes too much time for the money they can charge.
If you do try to reseal it your self you should try to get the same sealer the glass shops use as the standard silicone can be caustic and start corrosion where it touches bare metal.
There are many types of silicone sealer out there.

And be sure to clean the area where you suspect the leak to be really good before applying any sealant. I usually use liberal amounts of rubbing alcohol and cover well past the area I suspect as leaking. Approximately $5 in supplies to do it yourself, so well worth trying.

I picked up a tip from someone on this site for help in finding the leak. Close all windows and doors, turn the blower on high, turn the **** to vents. (Don't use MAX A/C.) Now use a spray bottle with a soapy water solution and spray around the windshield. The blower is building up pressure inside the vehicle so the air will come out any place it can. You will see bubbles where the windshield leak is.

DIY

Hey Guys, I had the leaking on the drivers side grab bar, it didn't have anything to do w/sunroof. It was the famous leaking windshield. Found my leak by spraying the top of windshield w/soapy water, closed all windows and turned on front/rear blowers on high, eventually you will see the leak where the bubbles show up. My leak was about five inches to the right of the rear view mirror (towards the drivers side A-post). It's not a bad diy job, pulled the top seal, cleaned as well as I could across the whole top of winshield, and sealed the channel with a product from state chemical called perma-seal, but I think a 100% silacone will work, replaced rubber seal. This worked great, hope this helps!

I thank this forum where I found the above information, as I too thought it was my sunroof.
