Cracked Windshield!

I have had my Expedition for one month so far and I love it.. I was driving down the highway the other day and heard a little tiny stone hit the windshield right on the edge of the driver's side of the windshield about half way up. It instantly cracked my windshield about 8 inches across which has now extended downwards toward the middle of the windshield. I was pretty shocked and upset that a little stone could cause this much damage.

My question is

1. Any chance Ford will cover this as a defective windshield?

2. If I replace it myself is there any advantage to going with a Ford Windshield over an aftermarket one from a local Windshield shop?

I still can't believe it happened so easily.

No. They'll see where the rock impacted and immediately call it your problem. That's just how it goes. Nothing they did made that rock hit your windsheild.

I've never had problems from local windsheild shops, and they're always much more reasonably priced than the dealers or the larger glass stores. My last windshield, for my Ranger, was $119 installed, and it's absolutely immaculate.

Well the dealer won't do a thing . The windshield for your truck runs 384.00 plus install. That is for the genuine carlite safety glass.

Last time we had our windshield installed on our '98 Expedition by a non-Ford dealership, water leaked in causing damage to the computers. Since the company that installed it are our friends, we couldn't call them out on it and had to pay for it out of pocket. That's just the way it goes though...

Call your local shop about the replacement. The dealers I have talked to in the past, outsource it to them anyway.

Dropped it off at the local glass guy which turns out is the same place the Ford dealer goes to as was mentioned above.

I was waiting around outside for a ride while they started and I have to say I would have rather NOT been there to watch what they were doing.

Sounds like you've already taken care of it but just as an FYI.

In the future you should check with your insurance company if you have glass break coverage on your policy for the specifics. I have USAA and if your car is the current model year they will replace it with OEM glass (only if you request it) at no additional charge other than your normal glass break deductible.
