Hi guys, I noticed yesterday afternoon while making a sharp right turn, that the wheel felt like it was hard against the stop, but was making a wide turn instead. While coming home for lunch today, I noticed it again two more times. I was at a place where I could stop and looked and the wheels were not turned far at all, but it feels hard over. The steering is from a 76, and the pump has been replaced.
Phillip, the fluid was OK earlier yesterday, and the belt is tight. I drove the truck back to the shop and home again, with no problems. It is intermitent.
Coming in Friday eve. the ps acted like parts were hanging up inside, and a time or two I heard a poping noise when it would unhang. I believe something is either loose or broken in the gear.
When you got the gear box, was it off a wrecked truck? What I have found in my experience is that because of the leverage on the gear box, it is very possible that the box may have been damaged from the start and is now showing up. You probaly, have a damaged gear box, at which needs immediate replacement. Should it lock up, very possible, you could end up in a crash.
Before you replace the box, just check all the basics, while the vehicle is supported on jack stands, remove the drag link from the pitman arm and see if you might not have a bad ball joint, or king pin. Turn each wheel by hand it should move freely and see if you don't get any bind up. Also check for any play.
One way to clear up intermittent PS is to remove the belt.... (Gottcha)
I believe you had previously changed your drag link and the king pins....those are common problems with power steering drag. In yuor case I have to agree with Dave. Your box is probably crying out for a rebuild.
