well not sure if this is normal.. But sometime the steering becomes really hard while stopped and trying to turn the wheel.. As if there is no power steering at all while running and standing still but as soon as I start to move the steering loosens right up.... Is this normal... Or do I have an issue... Everything else works great... Brakes work perfectly and steering works fine while moving.. thougts and opinions
Here's an interesting TSB Beachbumcook posted a while back:
Here is an interesting TSB that I just found (old, but worth while) about adding an in-line filter to the hydra-boost P/S line. Not sure what kind of filter it is or if it is the same as I used... but I guess I made a good choice for preventative maintanence.
2003-07 trucks grabbing brakes, pedal kickback:
This may be caused by power steering fluid contamination in the hydroboost system. There is a procedure for installing a temporary filter between the power steering pump and cooler to clean the system. After the cleaning procedure is complete and no brake grabbing or excessive steering effort is felt, remove and discard the filter. If brake grabbing continues, replace the hydroboost unit. Filter P/N XC3Z-7B155-BA;

Npc I read that.. but brakes aren't grabbing.. Only thing thing that is affected is the steering when stopped.. It will turn a little in both directions but not a full lock to lock even if i slip it in neutral and rev it.. But as soon as I start to move at all it kicks right in... Was thinking of flushing system not sure if it would help...
Situation sounds normal... the P/S system and brakes work off the hydraboost system... and it takes line pressure to build fluid pressure.
Be in a parking lot and apply the brakes at a dead stop and try turning the wheel... it can be difficult at times... becuase the brakes and steering hydraboost is connected.
If your steering is working fine and no sloppy play when driving down the road... then I would say your OK.
Now, you could have worn out dirty P/S fluid and your steering pump, steering gear box and hydraboost system may being showing the signs of being tired and dirty????
You may want to flush you P/S fluid with clean fresh Mercon V fluid and maybe add an in-line aftermarket Magnafine P/S filter (takes 15 minutes to install and no hoses have to be cut (just add filter and a few inches of new 3/8" hose).
Here is a link to an old thread... where I posted procedures and pictures of the Magnafine p/s fluid filter install... and what it filters out!!!
Best mod for the money... all for $20.00 or less.... Ford also buys this filter to use with rebuilt tranny's and P/S concerns (see TSB that was posted above and earlier by someone else)... here is the Ford part number: The Ford part number is: XC3Z-7B155-BA (3/8" nipple connections).... so obviously Ford has no problems with the Magnafine filter... so would I or you???
does a 2005 f350 psd use ATF in the power steering set up
Yes... but check your manual to verify all fluids that your truck may use/take. I drive an '03 Excursion 6.0L... so I do not want to sound like a know it all or maybe give you bad info... but your manual is your best resource... then I come in a close second after your manual!!!!
