Just stick with the motorcraft. they have a good history and seem to last a long time. the optimas that I have seen have been upwards of $220 or so. I dont think I would want to buy two of those. and yes be sure and replace both batteries at the same time. no matter if only 1 reads bad or not.
that's a decent price if you're looking at the 850CCA, not the 750's.. I've only replaced my batteries once since the truck was new, and I stayed with Motorcrafts.. No regrets..
Motorcraft are good batteries. I like DieHard Platinum's or Interstate. My Motorcraft's, that came with the truck, lasted about 3.5 years before I had to replace them. I ended up buying the DieHard Platinum P2's. They are AGM, on the expensive side - $180 each, and 950 CCA each. I liked the four year total replacement warranty along with another four years of pro-rating. I have had them a little over a year, and so far, so good.
I would second the DieHard AGM Platinum P2's, while I've had the OEM Motorcraft since new ( now 4 1/2 year) they have become tired after last winters -34 temps. I've used Walmart Everstart brand in the past in my other autos and had good luck with them. Currently I have one that is 6 years old in my 95 Olds 3.8L and it started fine last year at -34. But for starting a diesel in the dead of winter I would recommend the AGM batteries. They will crank the engine at a higher RPM ( slightly higher voltage but more capacity then flooded cell technology). Noticably faster cranking RPM then either the Motorcraft or Everstart batteries( almost sounds like you were cranking the engine without the glow plugs in).
Had the AGM now 2 months and no complaints with them so far ( other then the initial cost). The AGM technology in general terms is better then the flooded cell or gel cell and also you can get higher capacity battery then the gel cell technology.
If one lives in the southern climates mostly likely any battery will work fine, but if one lives in the northern climates where it can get cold one should consider a higher capacity battery and right now that seems to be AGM TECHNOLOGY.
Yeah, I got the Optima Yellow, List is 229.00. I get them for 140.00 a piece. They have a great warranty, and the fact that they are a sealed battery. But If I didnt have my hookup at Optima, I would be going for the Motorcraft batts myself.
