Batteries are FVP 700CCA from Factory Motor Parts (house brand). Given they are the budget brand but they are only 5 mos old. Battery voltage under load:
Hot batteries showing 13.4 after charge:
Under GP load: 11.9V
Under starter load: 9.7V
What's it sound like? Does it give the classic slowing sound of weak batteries? When it stops and you try again, does it make a sound? Clicking/ticking or nothing at all?
The 9.7V while trying to start sounds low, at least compared to mine w/ brand new 1000CA/850CCA batteries and a new alternator.
How cold is it there? I think you should try to get it started without the GPR kicking on and taking all of your power before it can crank fast enough for the injectors to kick on.
I'm assuming you don't have a block heater, but you could put a 75W or 100W light bulb in the engine compartment for a few hours and that will heat it up. That's my father-in-law's old trick that they used to have to do many moons ago!
it cranks over a couple times but no relay sounds, it just stops cranking Right now it's about 65 Degrees here (sorry you guys where it's colder, I'm not bragging) Should be no problem at all right now. I'm ready to go pick up a starter just because my parts supplier is closed sunday.
Have you checked the wires at the starter and its ground for tightness and if they're clean? My dad had a starter go on his van. He diagnosed it by trying to start it and when it stopped cranking, he gave it a good tap with a hammer and it cranked again. He replaced the starter and it was fixed.
65*, sounds like our weather in TX! My GPR was still turning on when I drove the truck today, it's in 62* right now. I would rule that out before buying the starter - it's a free test and will point directly to the starter or connections!
Looks like the connectors for the starter are solid. I attempted to "hit it with a hammer" which to my knowlege only works when the bendix is sticking but tried it anyway because I'd rather turn this thing around and work on it over my pit. I can't even get this thing going with 3 hot 650CCA batteries in series so I'm fairly sure it's the starter.
well... I wanted to put a motorcraft in but wound up spending almost $200 on a new starter from O'Riley. Kina a pain to put in but it only took about 90 min. and sounds uber kuel when it cranks over. I even turned the key with no WTS time and she fired up cold YEAH BABY!!! Hey thanks for all your help guys. I'm sure this baby will be trouble free for a while now
I'm tempted to wake up at dark:30 in the morning tomorrow just to check it. Since my core on a new starter was $5 I think I'll look for a rebuild kit and attempt to rebuild this sucker on my own. I'm pretty certain the only problem is the brushes considering the way it was acting. Besides; I tend to do things better than the bastadz that get paid to do it anyway.
Glad you got it all fixed up, hopefully you get a cold enough morning to test it all out. I guess when it comes to vehicle repairs, when it rains, it pours!
Not sure if I can chime into this thread, I am having similar hard start issues, sometimes I crank and crank (giving starter a rest in between of course), til my batteries are too weak and I have to charge them. I get the white puffs of smoke. I tested the GPR, I get 12.83v on left post, 11.8v on right after key turns on, it clicks off after about a minute, unless truck is warmed up, then it clicks off after about 10 seconds. I also tested all 8 GP connections on harness as mentioned above, I had .6 ohms on everyone. I did not try the I & C yet. Now what?
