Pyrometer install

Where is the easiest place to install a pyrometer on our trucks? Is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold to do it? I think I want a boost gage as well and think I can do that. What would be a last good gauge? Thanks A Curtis

Drill a hole in the exhaust manifold.

I'd recommend you install it in your up-pipe.

Exhaust manifold or up-pipe... take your pick.

I have had probes installed in both locations on my truck. Neither were particularly harder than the other. Both are correct locations, as they are pre-turbo installations.

As for brands of gauges, you'll get lots of opinions. I had Autometer in the past, and they were ok. Running DiPricol Optix now, and those are very nice.

Why the up-pipe? Isn't it closer to the piston itself in the manifold? Isn't that what we are looking for? The closes temp to the piston so we can avoid the meltdown?

With the location of the probe in the up-pipe, it's only a few inches away from the typical install location on the manifold. Temps are pretty much identical.

When I switched from an up-pipe probe to a probe mounted at the manifold, EGT readings remained identical on my truck.

Personally, I like mounting the probe in the manifold. It seems more "secure" that way. However, the probe in the up-pipe lasted several years without ever leaking or causing a problem. The only reason I switched from the up-pipe to the manifold was because I installed new bellowed up-pipes, and I didn't have the heart to drill a hole into those brand new beautiful pipes

Its all them same on the temp side, but I also prefer the up-pipe since it is easier to drill and tap IMHO.
