The bung nut is that big plastic nut on top of the tank.

This tells me you haven't yet filled up with fuel. Until you have filled completely up with fuel, and checked for leaks, you have not completed your harpoon job.

Oh ok. Well I'm a broke college kid, so I'll have to wait till payday (Tuesday) till I can fill up.

Fine, just don't worry about the fuel gauge until you do. If you are lucky it will fix itself. Mine will go on the fritz if I fill up while the truck is running, but it corrects itself by the end of the tank.

He's just referring to the seal between the tank and the sending unit assembly, the hole in oak barrels that is plugged with a round wooden plug is called a "bung".

Correct! In ancient times, the plug driven in casks of wine was called a bung, and the hole in the cask was called a bung hole. This has continued today, and the hole in the "head" of an oil drum is called a bung hole. Basically the cap on any drum or vessel can be called a bung.

Beavis and Butthead did not invent "bung hole", although they did a good job of popularizing it for the masses.

Ok, so I filled up this past tuesday and I've driven almost 200 miles and it's still on a slap full tank. I've filled up once before on my '04 and filled up to the tip top and it started coming off full at about 150 miles. This truck gets about 2-3 mpg better than my '04 though. If my truck gets about 18-19 mpg, how many miles should I be able to go before it first starts to move?

Around town driving, I get about 10mpg and 100 miles before my gauge moves. Highway driving I get about 17mpg and can get close to 175 - 200 miles before it moves. You have to remember that your tank now holds more than it used to, and the float is still pinned against the top of the tank like it always was.

oh I know. I would have just thought that it would have come off by now. Do you pull alot? Cause I get an easy 18 mpg around the city. And I have a heavy foot.

I do pull a lot, but those mpg's are running empty. Best I can get is 18 running empty with a light foot. It is what it is.

You'll know soon enough if your gauge is working right. Let's hope so.

If it ain't, what could be wrong? Could it be a very expensive fix?
