Hey, got a '74 F100 2wd with a 390. Engine has an Edelbrock intake manifold, Demon 650cfm carburetor, RV cam, just got some headers for it, and it was bored out a little. I think that's everything... One of my friends has a '78 F150 4x4 with the Flowmaster Super 40s and it sounds pretty good, but he's running out of the stock manifolds.
Well, here's my question.
I was thinking about buying 2 Super 44s, but then I was thinking about like the SLP Loudmouth. The SLP is really popular on the newer Mustangs, but I was just curious if anyone knew about anyone putting them on an older vehicle like this one or something. They give the mustangs a much raspier sound than the Super 44s, and I like it a lot.
Any opinions are greatly appreciated. I'm looking at buying some mufflers on Friday, then having it all installed a couple weeks later with my next paycheck.
BTW, I'm the kinda guy that's more into the loud and aggressive sound. I know people don't like the loud drone of the Flowmasters, but I personally love it, lol. The more car alarms I set off in the parking garage, the better
I run either dynomax race magnums (bullets) or Mac dumps on my truck. I'm switching back to the Mac mufflers now, sounds good but not as lout as the bullets. The bullets are at least as loud as a glass pack but sound better in my opinion, it's really not that much different than running a straight pipe.
Ya, my friend has the Dynomax Thrush mufflers on his truck, I think it's a 78, 4x4, Hedman headers... When he starts it up and revs it, all I can do is stand there and smile, lol.
Personally i have glasspacks that i've blown the glass out of and i love them. but i would go with flowmaster 40's american thunder. They're aggressive and not to terribly loud. My dad has them on his 74 with a 360.
I too prefer the sound of glasspacks, My buddy's got some on his 87 Chevy Stepside and they sound Sweeeeet... I'm going Headers/Straight pipe/Glasspacks behind my 406. Just dont tell the cops lol.....Prolly gunna throw some cut outs in there as well.
This is like the hardest decision for me, lol, everything else I want to do is easy, no problems. Exhaust is the hardest to choose. I've spent hours browsing youtube to get an idea of what exhausts will sound like, even though I've probably heard the same setups over and over again. Gotta say, some of them glass packs sound pretty good, I know for a fact the thrush are amazing, lol, and I'm liking the Dynomax Race Bullets, they sound really good with a lot of different setups...
I have a single thrush turbo muffler ( 25.00 ) that came with my 460.
It ends half way down the truck with the muffler as the exit point for exhuast.
It's a little loud when cruising, and revving but not like the flowmasters.
Idles quiet enough not to bother the neighbors.
I like my truck quieter than a flowmaster so i'll be going with a bigger thrush turbo ( cheap ) a resonator ( bullet style ) and full length single pipe.
If you want it to sound good get a flowmaster or dynamax, they even have dynomax with steel insulation packing so it doesn't burn out.
Advance auto has a little machine with recordings of how different mufflers sound compared to stock in their muffler aisle.
I installed the cheapo Summit Racing brand turbo mufflers this last Spring and LOVE the sound.
Previously I had Flowmaster 40s and hated every second of them, even though I kept them for 8 years. Before that I had some Dynomax straight turbos which sounded awesome in my teenage ears. Might be too loud for me these days though. But they had a nice "cackle" to them. A little more throaty than glasspacks.

I'm just the opposite. the cheap thrusts and cherry bombs sound awsome for about a month, (cackle) then have the "tired" burnt out sound. I ran em on several different vehichles for several years, with and without headers, no complaints here. The flow master's at least keep their tune for their life, love em or hate em. JMHO

I can see that with mufflers that contain fiberglass matting, but the Summit mufflers do not have that. Neither did the Dynomax mufflers I had back in the day.
