im lookig fo a maitance manul for a 71 ford 100 got one free (luck) but alot is missing from it.im new at the restoration game and need to know whats missing and whats gone.also i need to know how to tell the engine size ive narrowed it down to a 302 or 390
Count the bolt holes in the valve cover. The 302 will have 6. I'm thinking that the 390 will have 8 but I'm not positive on this. I know the 351C, 351M, and 400's have 8 holes. The 390 belongs to the FE engine series and I don't know as much about them.
I just finished rebuilding a 351W. All of the internals I asked the machine shop to get for me. He told me later he ordered most of it from Summit Racing. My headers, intake, carb, MSD distributor and ignition, Accel coil and wires all came from Summit. Stuff like the radiator, flywheel, belts and hoses I got from Advance Auto.
Joe, The 302 & 351W spark plugs look like this \\\\ while the FE bank will look like this \\//. The popular FEs are the 352, 360, and 390 in trucks.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
As far as the manual goes, checkout gearheadcafe.com
I have a 65 Ford and they were able to send me a complete set of original service manuals on cd. Cool idea, because I can print off the sheets I need and if I get them greasy, I just throw the sheets away. bout 50 bucks for the cd, but well worth it. Also, you can get on ebay and heckle someone for a Chiltons manual.
gearheadcafe.com is selling the same manuals we sell here, for the same price. They don't support the operation of this site. We'd appreciate if you could consider this site when making your purchases as it keeps our message boards operational.
Sorry Ken! You betcha. I wasn't aware that this site had them too, so my bad. Red, you will probably get them quicker from this site as well. The other place did take a heck of a long time, so lets do our part to support Ken and FTE.
Ken, thanks for posting that here. In my early FTE days I didn't stop to think either, and often just recommended places I had used myself. Over the last several months Motorhaven is where I recommend checking first for any type restoration product. FTE truly is the best, and if we want it to stay great we need to support it.
