trying to find info

Ive had a 71 Ford F100 Sport custom for some time now, but i need to replace a flex plate, but ive run into a problem. My truck has a 400 in it, but i cant find any info on a 71 f100 with that engine. The biggest i can find is a 390, but im not sure if they're compatible. To my understanding the 400 was introduced in 71, but im not sure if it was built with it or someone put it in later.

Mainly i just want to know the cost of a flex plate, if a 390 will work with a 400, how long can it take to replace, and is there anything specific I need to know?

71fordlover5516 Welcome to FTE & The Bumbside Forum.

If your truck has the 351-400 in it, that engine was introduced in 77. Check that year to see if you get a match. There may have been other 400 engines from Ford, but the truck was 77.

John is right on. In 71 you should have a 360 FE engine. Same block as a 352 or 390 or several bigger. Check out what ya got. look for a number cast in that is 352. That will tell us it is an FE. But post up a pic of it if ya can. How many valve cover bolts does it have on one side? It could also be a 302. But if it is a 351M/400 than it has been swapped in and the engine mounts have been modifyed and should be easy to see the cobbled welding.

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Not surprising, since the 400 wasn't available in F100/350's until 1977.
Welcome to FTE

400 (and 351C/351M) have 8 valve cover bolts per side.

1968/72 F100/350 available engines, 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code: A = 240 I-6 / B = 300 I-6 / G = 302 2V (1969/72 F100 only) / H = 390 2V / Y = 360 2V

D1AZ-6375-A .. 351M/400 Flywheel (Flexplate) / Obsolete

1971/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars 400/C6 - 1975/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars 351M/C6 // C6 only A/T available: 1977/79 F100/350 - 1978/82 Bronco - 1980/82 F150/350 & Econoline.

Make sure your truck has a C6. If the 400 was swapped from a car, it could have a C6 (17 trans pan bolts), or a C4 (11 trans pan bolts), or an FMX (14 trans pan bolts).
