Hello all! I've been looking at buying a keyless entry system for my truck and I had a thought..... Does my truck already have keyless entry, but the original owner didn't give me the remote? How can I tell? Did any trucks from this era have keyless entry? Thank!
I've heard 1 person I think say that his 150 had factory keyless entry, but he might have just bought it like that from a previous owner. Anyways, I've installed a keyless entry/remote start system in my 250 a few years ago.
I installed the main unit under the dash, hidden behind the carpet around the pedals. From there you splice a harness into the wiring harness that goes into the column (most of that is for the remote start feature.) It takes a while to figure out which wire goes to what, but my kit came with a vehicle specific wiring chart (which was about half wrong) and the chilton book was no help either, so a good multimeter here is a must. Also, these trucks have reverse polarity locks, so you need to get a door lock relay module (around 10 bucks) to relay the low current signal from the control box to the high current (and different) signal of the door locks. I ran the wires from the main control box under the dash and into the passenger side door, and placed the relay module inside the door. I ran the antenna wire under the plastic panel on the floor board where the door closes, I forget what that's called, but it's a great place to run wires. I mounted the antenna in the corner of the back window glass.
All in all, I would say that it was worth it. I never use my key to open the door any more, I just use the keyless entry. I don't use the remote start though, because it's just not that cold here on the CA coast.
I did the whole install at night in the dark (started it while it was light thinking it was going to be quick, didn't want to drive to school the next day a dismembered door and wires hanging in the pedals, so I worked through the night.) I'm an electrical engineering student, so the wiring part wasn't really an issue for me, but if you need any help lemmie know.
Here's a picture of how to connect the relay module in the door, this took me the longest time to figure out in the whole project.
Ford does have a keyless entry. I hate after market crap. I just wonder if it is a plug and play install?
I had my doubts about the aftermarket thing too, but I've been using it for a couple of years now, and I'm happy with it, no failures at all. The only complaint that I've had with it is that the labels wore off the remote.
From what I remember about the thread I read concerning the truck with remote entry already installed, it's not a direct plug and play add on. The harness supporting those features just isn't there.
