Well to say the least, i can not pass inspection with out a horn.
it seems my truck has not had one for a while. can someone
help me with the proper wire color that is supposed to go to
the horn? i am not sure the wires are even in the proper
location. i have a rats nest of wire in the area of where the
horn and starter solinoid areas are. i have so far removed
about 40 feet of multiple gauges of unused wire. i have no
idea what the previous owner was thinking.
IF someone does not chime in I will have a look at mine mid morning and let you know. I am working on mine in that area anyhow.
You got to wonder don't you? Some of the PO's and their half witted, hair brained, half baked ideas of the day! I guess the don't think down the road, or long term.
But anyhow I am at work, and I will have a peek at mine and let you know if someone else dosen't beat me to it, and good luck!!
PS: Did you test your horn relay, I goofed mine up and had to get a new one.
Thanks for the help. i am in no rush. no i have not tested it yet. the horn is totally gone. i have to go to the yard to get one tomorrow, or i mean later today. i agree i am still trying to remove more wire that i know is not attached to anything. the way some of the wire is ran around the engine makes me sick. I have one wire with 3 different gauge sections spliced together by butt connectors pinched together. i am a master at soldering with a nasa certification. i will fix the harness. this truck must have been just a trail Rig. it seems all lights work properly. it seems to have the absolute minimum needed to run. fine by me. i just like driving it. as long as the seats are comfortable im ok with it.
Yep, Chad is right it is yellow. but not a bright yellow, more of a creme/yellow. Also there is one coming out of the same area of the same color, but that goes into the plug for your voltage regulator, so that shouldn't be a mix up.
I guess i will need a little more assistance. i do not see any yellow wires.
i might need to trace back farther up the harness. can some one help me
with a picture of the wire or where it goes in to the harness.
The standard horn is located by the battery. You should see some wire around the area. If not, the PO probably yanked/cut the whole thing off. I don't recall where the horn wire terminate to. There is only one wire, and that's the load. The horn is self-grounding.
Do you have a horn relay on the passenger side inside fender apron? If you do, trace it from there to up beside the battery. If not then it would go from there into your firewall under the passenger side wiper.

Hope you don't have to go back that far!!
You only have a horn relay if the truck was equipped with the factory cruise control.
I'll take a pic of mine if the rain lets up tomorrow...
I have the electrical schmatics for the 79 Ford trucks I can email anyone that wants them. I bought a set years ago and had them put on a floppy. moose4x4@juno.com Later Bruce
Thanks for all of your help! I found the Wire for the horn.
The problem was that the PO painted the engine bay Red.
Well some of the harness was painted Red as well. He Must
have also painted the engine bay Blue at one point. Needless
to say the harness wire for the horn was blue with a hint of
red. once i removed the rest of the useless wire from the PO
i narrowed it down to just a couple of wires. i found the proper
wire and all is good! once that was done i went to the local
yard and pulled a steering wheel and horn from a old truck
in the yard and will install them tomorrow.
