As a new PSD owner, I have recently had some issues with my truck of late and have realized just how impossible it is to trouble shoot what could be a minor problem without the aid of a scanner, unlike my old IDI F-250.
After having my truck towed to a repair shop, so far it appears that the solenoid in the #8 injector is bad or that its wire harness may need to be replaced. Also the CPS needs replacement, which I already did just before sending it to the shop, however the shop still needed to reset the error code for it.
With a scanner I could easily have figured this out for myself, performed my own labor, and minimized the down time for my truck.
- What diagnostic scanning tools are there available (with ability to diagnose, trouble shoot and reset codes) and that you recommend?
- Are there any priced within the means of a vehicle owner rather than the owner of a repair shop?
There are several options. I personally like my Scan Gauge, as it's there full-time for reading all kinds of parameters, any codes, and resetting them. For data logging and more detailed analysis, AE is the way to go. Even though I have a Scan Gauge, I could use the more detailed capabilities of AE.
There are also combination tuners/programmers that read & reset codes, so it's up to you, your wallet, and your goals. AE is close to $400, IIRC, the Scan Gauge is $269, and programmers/tuners vary.
Send an email to Clay at Riffraff and pick up AE. sales@riffraffdiesel.com That is where I got mine from. You can monitor all the engine sensors and even change your speedo for different tire sizes.
The scan gauge is cool and handy, but not near as powerful as AE.
You can get AE for about the same price as a visit to Ford.. LOL
Do the AE. I've used it on quite a few vehicles and it is easily paid for by the savings from going to the repair shop. Did a neighbor's Excursion recently and found out that it even diagnoses the backup sensors. So I did mine and found out which sensors had failed. It is a very powerful tool.

You can do all that with the gauge. I'm glad I have the gauge, but the only thing I can't do is data log for graphing purposes. It actually does record 60 seconds of data for later review, but I like the graphing capabilities of AE.

I didn't realize it does tire size calibrations?
How many tests can it run on the motor? I thought it just did buzz test and Cylinder contribution...
The scan tool and a programmer do not interfere with each other, as they do completely different things.
The scanner just reads PCM data from various sensors.
[edit]: I got beat, lol. Anyways, if your programmer changes how the PCM sees certain data like boost or ICP, the scanner will show the changed data and not the actual readings.
