Why do I feel like I have taught someone something useful today?
Backstory: Neighbors oldest son he's 16-17 or so wanted to replace his oil pan on his Tacoma I offered to let him barrow my 3.5 ton jack and help as much as I could.
He apparently bought some cheap $9.99 jack stands online that were rated for 6 tons, I didn't like the looks of them since the welding for the base was some of the sloppiest work I have ever seen on any tool I have used. I warned him about them but he wanted to use them anyway.
He set them up just two ticks over their lowest setting and once done he went into the garage to get the oil pan when we both heard the truck slam back on to the wheels as the both jack stand bases broke their welds.
We probably would have been pinned painfully under the truck but not outright crushed by my judgment but this reinforces my resolve to get a set of 12 ton jack stands from a reputable company when I do my own work. Hopefully my neighbors son learned that lessons too.
Why doesn't he send a strong-worded letter to the company? I know I would, I'm sure they would love to see the pic of the would-have-been lawsuit on their hands!
Also, I try not to rely on jackstands when I'm working under a vehicle. I usually find a big tire or anything of that structure to sit under the side of the frame that I'm working on as a "just in case" prevention.

Why did I think it was strange for you to ask about smartcars? Why do I not know if someone in your extended family, or one of your friends own a smart car thereforeyou you just being a nice guy and helping out? LOL!!
