do i need. im painting a 49 cab, doors, hood and the bed. one color and the fenders, running boards another how much paint will i need. to do the job I'm thinking 1 gallon of clear should do but how much base.
oh and i,m going to tint the sealer body color.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing with my 53 F250, still in the cutting out the old and rotten replace with new and solid part but paint time is getting closer all of the time.
Need more info....are you painting inside of cab and bed? Under hood? What color? Some cover better than others..... what brand and mix ratio? what type gun.......hvlp? These are all factors.......T/M
Like tinman said, need more info. I sprayed that wonderful Chevy gold color a few years back and it sprayed like water. It took 6 coats to cover. The guy wanted cheap, so we tried Keystones paint. After that, just for the sake of trying another brand, we got a pint of PPG. Sprayed a fender after preping it the same as the truck and it took the normal 3 coats.
If you use the old style guns (where the cup is on the bottom) you cant use all the paint in the gun.
Definatly need to know what all is being painted.
If you are going to be clearing the inside of everything, you might need a gallon and a quart of clear. Again that is gonne be determined by manuf and the look you are going for (show quality or everyday truck usage quality)
just painted my 56 with ppg. went with 3 coats. did the whole truck including inside the bed, door jambs, around inside back window, dash and doors and under the hood. used almost one and a half gallons mixed 1to1. 4 coats of clear used almost 2 gallons.
painting outside of hood cab inside dash 4 in strip over windshild and jambs outside off box and tailgate one color. and the fenders running boards and two small front pieces another color. body color will be burgandy. fenders gun metal gray.
The mixing 1 to 1 is gonna depend on a few factors. Temp when you are spraying and the product you are using. Some products require a 1 to .25 or .5 ratio (paint to reducer). But to get the most out of your paint, I would also recommend using red oxide primer for the burgandy and gray primer for the gun metal gray. No need to pay extra for tinted primer, as these are standard primers.
Also one thing to remember with the gun metal grey (actually a couple) 1) you will need to work relativaly fast with this to prevent as much metallic from seperating out of the paint as you use it. 2) You always want to paint the body part layed out the same way as it would be mounted on the vehicle.
And depending on how much experiance you have painting, I would recomend 3 quarts of color for each. That way you will definatly have enough. Plus the shelf life of unmixed paint is a very lond time as long as the can is sealed good.
I've had problems with Omni covering as well as "good" paint. Seems to take twice as much......... which is why I don't use it very often. BTW, 3 quarts usually is the same price as a gallon, at least around here, so you might as well get a gallon....good luck. T/M
