I have not noticed any oil consumption, excessive smoke or anything out of the ordinary since I did this CCV mod. I am just not convinced that the oil is coming from the cannister.....I think it is some residual from the IC radiator I never cleaned. I am planning on doing a RR from ITP soon which means I will disassemble the top to gain access. I will check further.
This really sounds odd to me. What is your theory on how the oil was getting into the combustion system?
Also, do you know what is an acceptable crankcase pressure?
I will check on the crankcase pressure. I don't remember what the spec was, but the pressure is very low. Still working on the oil problem, however, I am not losing any significant amount of oil between oil changes, at least nothing by that can be detected by dipstick level.
Being the curious sort, I would still like to know the crankcase pressure that would begin to cause problems. However, I did do my crancase pressure test today and I am sure I do not have an issue.
I connected 3/8 inch hose up to the dipstick tube and then connected a pressure/ vacuum gauge to the other end. I ran the hose into the cab and had my wife hold it while I drove. I could see no measureable pressure from the gauge, no matter what speed I drove. I was thrilled (and obviously so was my wife). I did let the engine get hot. At WOT I say a VERY slight vacuum - less than a 1/4 in of H20 I would say.
From this test, I am convinced that I am not back-pressuring anything w/ my CCV filter. I wish I had done this test before I upgraded to the Racor filter and 1 inch lines, but hey - maybe you will get curious and do it Joe???
The test run on mine was through the oil filler cap. Tech attached a set of gauges and the truck was held at about 2200 RPM for X # of seconds. I'm sure there's probably a specific procedure in the Ford tech manual (which I don't have access to any more).
A question I have is that with the long distance from the engine that you guys have the ccv filter mounted... are you getting any white foamy oil at the filter? This happens on gas engines that have the oil fill or dipstick farther from the engine allowing it to cool the oil and collect moisture, making a white gooey mess. Also from a lot of short trips.
I just installed the CCV reroute and kept it under the hood. I used 1" hose and copper fittings (to keep inside diameter at max). The separater is simply a stainless screen so should have no backpressure. It also only took a total of 4' of hose, 2 in each direction.
