man. you guys find some BIG holes to get buried in!
Yeah I'm not very good at estimating how deep water covered holes are, which is why I'm now pretty freaked by them. The time I was referring to I actually fell into a small channel about 2 feet from the main river channel, so it could have been much worse. As soon as I entered the water, I dropped in up to my headlight, by the time I got out my front end was submerged over the hood. I think the cleaning is what keeps me from hitting water holes anymore.
If I'm unsure of how deep water is, I go into it backwards. That way the motor is dry it u plop into a big hole.
Its crazy how soft the ground is along the river though. That's usually the part that gets you stuck good. Its "suction" keeps you from gettin out.
Hey Dave, I noticed you have your rear diff welded. Would it be unwise for me to weld up my 8.8 rear? ( I think thats what I have ) Its not a dd but I do drive it on the street quite a bit.
Bad idea if u use it on the street too much. When I had a welded rear in my 79,(drove it to wheelin spots) I broke a lot of rear end parts, and that was a 9 inch. If you see any street time, I hate to say it, but a locker is the way to go. I've been lookin. Fo one for my 8.8 in my DD.
Around $250 for a Lockright or a Aussie locker. Maybe $500 for a Detroit. I'm goin to try a Aussie in my DD, and if that doent hold up, put a Detroit in it.
I am hard on stuff, in my old 78( oops I hit the 9 earlier) I broke a rear axle shaft makin a u turn in the street. I blew the carrier bearing caps off the third member pullin onto main. I busted a spool in half on the interstate. I broke a cross pin (had a mini spool) tryin to pull out a stuck pickup. Did I mention I'm hard on stuff
No, not really, a welded rear has their place, and its not on the pavement. Maybe if it was a 10.25 instead of a 8.8. But still, lockers are a lot better for use on the pavement.
Yes, you do, but the origoinal question was about a 8.8. Now for yours, is it a Full floater 10.25 or not? Either way, with the experiance I've had with welded rear axles on the street(of all sizes and makes) I would still go with a locker.
Well for 250 I don't know why anyone would want to weld the rear. I think I'll keep looking for a f250 donor truck, then I'll add a locker. Trying to build it up as cheap as I can.
