Okay, good question. You are correct. If the language filter catches a word that's not a reason alone to get a post removed. It does tell the rest of us something about someone who does it though. That they are discourteous, disrespectful, unmannerly, uneducated or just weren't raised the know the difference. But the language filter is in place to keep FTE clean. Not to keep our butt's out of a sling. The User Guidelines state:
2. Personal Conduct . Post language and material suitable for the home or office. Do not post foul language, racial epithets or sexually explicit content in any form. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.
In any form. That means if you habitually bump the language filter you are showing intent. A moderator can give you a friendly heads up, a formal warning or an infraction for using profanity. The asterisks may be removed because they often can generate more replys using the same language. The post can be removed if the moderator gets tired of you making more work for him and he's not going to reward you by cleaning up your posts.
Now in the case I believe you are refering to, the language filter wasn't bumped. But instead symbols were used to bypass the language filter. This is a worse breach of posting ettiquette because it shows you know better and are showing intent by getting around the language filter. Remember, in any form. Both the post and reply contained the F word not so cleverly disguised with symbols to get around the language filter. In this case, your friendly moderator removed both the post and the quoted reply to get someone's attention instead of rewarding them for breaking the rules by cleaning it up. Also, as it turned out, a good oppourtunity to help get the word out to the the rest of the forum.
