My truck is having issues shifting gears. I apologize for the wordiness.
Some history:
E40D transmission was rebuilt in 2007, shop warrantied the trans for 1 year or 20,000 KM (12,000 miles). In spring 2008, ball joints went so the truck sat for a year. After 6,000 KM, the truck is having shifting problems again, and is off warranty.
this started happening 3 weeks ago and has been getting worse, ball joints were replaced 3 months ago.
The truck will run fine in first gear, but will have trouble from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd (sometimes). The shift seems to go into neutral, the RPMs will come up and then drops in to next gear with a clunk. It is worse when driving for a while and trans is hot. It does not happen every time, but is getting more frequent.
I do know the trans shop did not put in a new torque converter when they reinstalled the rebuild. Could it require a new one? I will take it back to the shop this week and argue my case for warranty. I would rather fix a broken part then replace the whole trans for $2000 again.
There is no leakage or trans fluid nor is the level low (between hash marks when fully warmed up). I am also a light driver, light on the gas when starting out and light on the brakes when stopping.
Any advice or things to narrow down the problem would be appreciated.
Most shift kits include the valve, it is located in the accumulator valve body up towards the pump, Just remove this section and replace it or install the valve and springs from the shift kit.
Thank you, I will try the valve and spring swap if a shift kit is not too expensive. I think they are selling for under $200.00, which is a tenth of the cost of another rebuild. It make take me a week to get the time to complete this but I will keep you posted.
