So if there's a single element, how does it switch from low to high and back again?
There is a shield between the reflector and projector that creates the cutoff. In "bi-xenon" retrofits, that shield is moved by a solenoid when high beams are selected.
Or the lamp moves on most case for retrofit headlights.
BTW there is not any filament, Just a arc gap. High voltage
is applied and an arc jumps the gap and ionizes the gas.
That creates a path for the main current ti flow. The color
is created by 2 things. The mix of the gases and by the diplomatic
filter that is part of the outer envelope.

Are you asking about an HID bi-xenon projector? If so, a solenoid controls a shield. The shield is in place giving a clean cutoff line. When you activate high beams the solenoid triggers the shield to move out of the way allowing the full light output.
Makes total sense, thanks. I had a Jag S-Type R that had auto-leveling HIDs (broken, always pointing at the ground), and I thought maybe there was something that moved in there. Seems like that's the case.

Auto-leveling is usually a different thing altogether. We were explaining high and omw beams from a single light source.
On my BMW with auto-leveling, there is an arm and a sensor attached to one front control arm, and motors on the headlights that adjust the aim of the entire projector/reflector assembly.
Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how or what I need to do to keep my low beam on when I switch to hi beam. I have a 99.5, which I installed the spyder projector headlights. I upgraded the kit when I bought them. It came with HID's in the low beam and halogens in the Hi beam. My problem is that I have the HID's/lo beam adjusted kinda low. But when on those dark roads as in the back roads in Texas, when I switch on my HI beam's, it cancels out my lo beams. My lo beams provide that side to side light that's needed to light up the critters standing on the side of the road. I know brite box sells a kit for around $100, but there has to be a simpler cheaper way to accomplish this.

It sounds like the best thing for you would be to find a relay kit that's pre-wired for whatever socket types came on your new headlights. Something similar to this:

Hey guys, its been a long time since I have posted on here! but I just had a quick question.
I was wondering if anyone on here had changed to HID bulbs on a 04 superduty?
I found a great deal on the bulbs for less than $100 and am planning on putting them in my 04. I know they won't be as good as reflectors designed for the HID bulbs but I think they will still be brighter!

Stock lens is the best lens for a good spread of a HID bulb. Will have to keep a check on heat on the fixture

(allowing current to flow to back to low beam)
Have been, for years with no issues on my other truck.
Yet now, most all my vehicles are retrofitted to H1 projectors (high/low beam). I'll never go back.

What specification diodes do you use?
I didn't think about that for such high current. I use diodes to make my halos into turn signals on my BMW when the parking lights are off, but I use all relays for high+low on all my vehicles.
I agree: Morimoto Mini H1 are amazing!
