well went for a drive yesterday after getting my egt gauge hooked up, and my truck blows black smoke pretty good, so i figured i would see some hot numbers, well driving around on flat ground i got about 350-400 went off the mountain and turned around to climb it, its a 7% grade kinda long mountain too, well hit it in high gear which is 4th gear, egts went to 600-650, couldnt get them any higher than that, held the mountain at about 50 the hole way, i expected some hot numbers considering how much black smoke it blows.
I also finished putting in a pyrometer and transmission temp gauges. I located the pyro near the bend on the driver side manifold. I turned up the IP about 1/4 turn. I only get smoke under load. My temp seems to be under 350 around town. If I get on the pedal it will jump up to about 600 or so. I took the truck to a long step county road and kept it at about 55. The temp got up to about 1200 and I started to back off. It did get up to 1250 before cooling back down.
The transmission temp has got up to 100 – 105. This is under normal around town driving at about 45 degrees out side. I did cut the bowl out of the air intake. I’m looking into the exhaust and cold air intake.
i couldnt get mine above 600, 350 400 crusing around town, but i couldnt get it above 600 pulling the mountain, had plenty o smoke,
and no joe i didnt use no hammer lol, just used a drill bit drilled a hole tapped it and hooked every thing up not to hard, i put mine in the third cylinder back on the driver side exaust manifold, thats as far as i could get back with my drill but its right on top of the cylinder
I'm wondering why there is such a large temp difference. How much of it is the exhaust and how much is the location. I would not think the exhaust is making that much of a difference. There is bound to be some but not that much.
Free flowing exhaust makes a big difference cold air intake makes a difference.
Rpm's also makes a big difference.
well i got duals from the manifolds back to the rear axle with daul flowmaster mufflers, then it goes into a single 3 inch pipe exits behind the rear tire, and to me it look like its all mandrel bent there is no kinked up bends, i also have a ram-air intake, when i was climbing i hit the mountain at about 55-60 so that puts my rpm some were around 2000, got half way up and it started straning, so i gave it 3rd gear and i gues the rpms are some were around 2600-3000, the hole time i had my foot as far as i could get it into the floor board lol, and there was plenty of black smoke to but the highest i ever saw was 650 which i thought is kinda cold

It is too cold. I suspect your gauge is not set up properly. A stock N/A diesel like this will pass 1000 rather easily when pushed hard. If you're foggin mosquitos and only seeing 600 on the gauge, then I think you need to look closer at the system because it should be reading higher when climbing a hill like that.
the guy i bought it from, punk mechanic, on oil burners, said that he tested it he said he heated the probe up till the gauge read 300 and then he shot it with a heat gun thing that read the temp and said that the gauge reads about 30- 40 degrees off, so if i factor that in it puts me closer to 700 degrees, what should i do, i really dont know nothing about egt gauges.
I would look at getting a new pyrometer or testing the one you have. It will not help much if it’s off 3 or 4 hundred. Unless you know it off and take it into account. I just don’t like the idea of using something that you know is not working right. What an extra 400 degrees anyways?
lol, well i got somemore numbers i just drove it to town and back, running 55 i got 400 egt, i have no idea if its right, but the guy i got it from tested it, and said it was only off by 30-40 degrees

You may have a cool running truck. Who knows. It seems you have it installed correctly. Before I added the turbo I hit 1150 at 3300 rpm in 3rd gear under power. I never drive my truck that hard, I was just seeing how high the egt's would go. It scared me silly. I was thinking about all those hills I pulled out west and wonder why I haven't blown it up. Since the turbo, I've seen 1050 under a hard pull. I'm going to wreck, if I don't quit watching the guages.
thats exactly what my grand pa told me hes making a 4 gauge mounting pod for me, he said if i get to watching the damn gauges instead of the road that i will reck it lol
