dyoung14 if you're pyro is close to right then you're not getting enough air. Think of it like this. Turn the gas on on a cutting torch and light it. The flame is cold with lots of black soot. Start turning the oxygen to it and the flame gets hot enough to melt metal. Hit the air button and it will start cutting thru steel. You say you are blowing lots of black smoke which means you are flooding the engine with fuel. Since you can't get more air in without a turbo cut the fuel back some and I would bet the exhaust temps will start to come up.

i run the isspro brand pyrometer in my pete . i run it to 1,000 degrees max any thing higher i down a gear . around town it runs right around 600 degrees. i know its a 3406C cat motor but a motor is a motor they all melt down the same been there done that. an black smoke is just unburnt fuel . low exhaust temp = rich fuel mix,no load .. high exhaust temp = lean fuel mix ,heavy load . now to make power lean is mean just watch pyro an detonation. isspro has some info on the web site

huh?

I thought that diesels ran cool with a lean mix and hot with a rich air to fuel mix. and gasoline engines are the exact opposite of that.

Yep, the man has it right, diesels are the opposite of a gas engine when it comes to this. Lean out a Gasser, and it gets hot, lean out a diesel and it run cold, hence why they don't make any big amount of fuel idling.
And, as for detonation, if you don't have it happening in a diesel, you don't have a running diesel... LOL

Since a full charge of air enters the cylinder on every intake stroke and the amount of fuel injected is what varies engine speed, lean and rich do not apply to diesel engines other than rich is when the engine tries to go faster, lean is when it is slowing down.
