Interesting couple of posts. I could have sworn the title of this thread was OBS vs. Superduty.....
well, it started out as obs vs superduty, but kind of morphed into obs 7.3 vs sd 7.3 and now could take a turn into 7.3 vs cummins.......so yeah, time to get back on topic.
my rankings would be
1st-close race with obs 7.3 and sd 7.3. cant go wrong with either one.
2nd-obs gasser with 7.5
3rd-obs gasser with small block
4th-sd gasser
I gotta disagree with your third and fourth place trucks, i'd flip them around, but you can't go wrong with any ford truck (3/4 ton and larger) so each to his own.

i have them in that order because of the immense amount of aftermarket parts available for the 5.0. its also much easier and cheaper to modify. pretty much your only options with the 5.4 are a supercharger and a tuner. i can build a bad a$$ 5.0 for less than what one head for my 5.4 would cost.
100% wrong on that one. Most 4.6L parts work on 5.4L engines. There are numerous parts available and some are even cheaper than the 5.0L.
Pickup a modular mustang magazine, you'll see the plethora of parts available for 4.6/5.4L engines.
i usually stick to jegs and summit and they never have anything for a 4.6 or 5.4 in the mustang or truck section. i havent looked at any mustang mags recently though. all i hear from the guys at the drag strip that have 4.6's is how they cant find parts for them, or when they do they cost an arm and a leg. i was looking up cams not too long ago and the cams alone were over $700. you can get a good 5.0 cam for less than $150.

They probably arent looking very hard. There is everything from pistons and cranks to heads and intakes available. I agree that they can cost more but thats a trait of all newer engines.

When the 5.0 was as new as the 5.4 is now, the cams were also high priced. I actually have purchased cams from summit for a 2V 4.6L mustang and never spent $700 on them, I believe they were $580ish, shipped.
Another thing to think about is that some of the 5.0L performance cams profiles are similar to the 5.4L stock cams.

one of the main problems i have with the 4.6 and 5.4 is that it has taken ford about 10-15 years to get them up to the same power level as the old push rod engines had back in the 80's and 90's. when the 4.6 and 5.4 first came out they couldnt pull the truck alone up a hill, much less a trailer of any weight. which is why the 97 model 250's and 350's kept the obs. the 4.6 in the mustang has just now gotten up to 320lbs of torque. 15 years after the last 5.0 had 300lbs. and throw in the fact that the new mustang is as heavy as a lincoln, its not going to win too many drag races in stock form. the 5.4 is at something like 350 or 360lbs of torque and the 5.8 had what, 330-340lbs? my father in law has an f150 with the 4.6 in it and its a joke compared to my 5.0 and it gets the same mpg too. its like ford took 10 steps back when they switched to the mod motors, and now that theyve taken 10 steps forward they are in the same place they were 15 years ago.
the v10 makes a decent amount of power, but what does it say about the mod motors when ford had to make a v10 out of it in order to compete with the v8's of other brands? it wasnt too long ago dodge was the one that had to come out with the v10 just to compete with fords v8's, and us ford guys had quite a laugh at the dodge guys expense. its the other way around now......
when im talking about supporting mods, or basic mods, that includes stuff like hpop, injectors, intakes, etc. things that i can do without pulling the engine or having to fabricate a lot of stuff. if i did nothing but put in a set of stage 1's, a chip and change my hpop would i not make more power than a sd with stage 1's and a chip since i have a bigger turbo? we would have the same injectors, same hpop and be very similarly matched trucks. the only difference would be the turbo.
actually the SD would make slightly more because of the intercooler... with only stage 1s the stock SD turbo won't be choking too much... especially if it's an early 99 because they have a better compressor wheel
and you apparently missed my point about injectors too. what i was saying is that just because you can get 125 hp out of a set of stage 1's on an obs does not mean that you will get 125 extra hp out of the sd by adding those same injectors. the sd already comes from the factory with more "supporting mods" than mine has, so it will see less gains out of each additional mod done to it. if you take a truck with a 15 degree hpop and put a set of stage 2's and a 20 degree hpop on it will you not see more of an improvement than you would with taking a truck with a 17 degree hpop and putting a set of stage 2's and a 20 degree hpop on it? the total improvement over the starting point will be different, but the end result will be the same. am i wrong here?
no that would be correct and what i was getting at earlier

corrected or uncorrected #s? that torque is VERY low for a cummins making 500 hp... a cummins with 500hp is normally around 1100ft lbs instead of 800... and an edge juice (w/ attitude?) will not make 500hp to the wheels
if it's a 24v i don't believe those numbers for a second, if it's a commonrail they're a little more believable but without a graph it's all just here-say and the operator could have either made a mistake or didn't know what he was doing.. or those are the real numbers!! but we don't know without a graph and all that stuffs

its been a while since i talked to him about his truck, so im not for certain on all the numbers on it. but i do know the torque was right around 800. ill have to ask him about the hp the next time i see him, which should be one day next week. ive known the guy that runs the dyno for years and he knows what hes doing, so id say he didnt make a mistake on it. very few people believe that guy with the dodge when he tells them he has two full bodied/interior street legal mustangs with over 1400 hp, but ive seen the dyno on both of them and ive been in the lane next to him when he ran a 7.95 at 180 mph in the 1/4. i dont doubt his dyno numbers one bit, but if those numbers on his truck dont sound legit with what he said he had done to it then he may just be lying about what all mods his truck had. on a positive note, he did trade the dodge in on a SD.
But you can count me in the camp that would like an 8 speed also. I consider the 6 speed a granny plus 5. That said, the jump between 2-3, & 4-5 is too big when towing a trailer. Stick a gear between each one of those, and throw in a double overdrive when empty and I'd be happy. I guess that really makes me want a 9 speed then.
Well me and a boy I hang out with, we talekd and we lol would love to have like a 1995 Ford F350 with a Powerstroke or Cummins and a Super 10 transmission, I would love it to death lol.

i'm not saying he's lying but more info would be needed to see if that's even possible, like i said with a common rail its more likely... and god would i love to have 2 1400hp mustangs....

heres a link to one of his cars. this was from fun ford 2005. hes done a lot more to it since then. a whole lot more. he broke on his 3rd run and still managed to average a 9.03 over the 3 runs.
