2005 NAV drive train noise
Trying to help a friend, he has an 05 Navigator and he has a loud clunk that sounds like it is coming from the transmission when ever he lets off the gas. The truck has been at the dealer twice now for over two weeks while they try to figure it out. They are now replacing the ring and pinion saying that is their best guess. Does this sound right? There is no noise outside of the clunking sound, no whining etc. Any ideas?

4WD? If so it could be the transfer case. Were the drive shaft u-joints inspected or replaced?
Years ago my father had a Bronco II with a clunk. The local shop told him the rear end needed to be rebuilt for $800. To me it sounded like u-joints. I changed them and only $40 later his clunking was gone.
