you get what you pay for

I wouldn't bother with any of the stuff I have heard that people have to do to get some of the cheeper stuff to fit....
Buy Banks and you can count on it fitting and lasting...
I don't sell Banks, I'm just a believer in quality..... if all everybody caired about was cheep,,,we would all be pulling our 14,000 lb 5th wheels with Hugo's... that was cheep..

Well, my $180 dollar ebay headers did the trick - I got more high-end, they are lasting very well even through bad salty winters here on Long Island, and I even sold my old manifolds for $400 on eBay.

The only thing that a Banks set would have done for me is that I wouldn't have had to shave the frame. That took about 20 minutes.

Same here! (but not the re-selling manifolds. I tried, and after no hits, I scrapped 'em).

I would have at least asked around here if anyone needed them

As for me, I left them in my eBay store for, I think, about 6-9 months or so, it took a while. I put a "best offer" or $400 on them, and someone bought them without dickering.

Too late now... goneZo!! Bummer, I guess I just figured that anyone willing to pay for stock logs would rather pay for headers.

I believe it was a shop that bought them. Someone needed unwarped ones, or uncracked, and the shop found them.

I was tempted to stop by a few exhaust shops and see if someone wanted them. In the end I didn't want to invest anymore time into those damn logs. So, off they went - into the pile of rotors and other steel junk (about 975#'s worth).

But, in line with the title of this thread; I'm planning on putting my truck on the dyno. I'm going to try to make an appt for sometime in the next week or two. Hoping to make some safe power with 87 oct. and maybe have my tuner build me a towing tune.

fordmdb, I'd like to know what you're doing with the ignition timing in your tunes. When I watched the timing in my stock '99 with a scanner it was way down around 12-15 degrees advanced at WOT. At about 4500 RPM the timing would immediately jump up to around 24-26 degrees. There was obviously a noticeable power increase when this happened. Have you seen this trend in trucks with the stock programming? Also, any idea why Ford would do this? My thought was that the lack of advance and lean A/F ratio at WOT may have been an attempt by Ford to improve emissions. Anyhow, I read this entire thread and didn't see any mention of what was done with the timing. Thanks!

I've watched the timing on my 5.4 2v pi and it stays around 22 at wot and thats with a diablo tune which made a huge difference.

Building your own tune?

I would think instead of paying to run on a dyno and messing with trying to build a tune, you might be ahead to just buy it from 5-Star.
I was greatful I did.

hi
many things effective timing. but its typical from what you are seeing in stock form. Timing can be increased in certain engine load and rpm areas once the horrible fuel correction from factory is corrected. Octane of fuel also plays its part in how much timing advance you can apply.

Running good

I could go on for an hour telling you how much better my V10 runs but to sum it up.... 60 mph over the Smokies pulling a 14,000 lb 5th wheel with a 16ft boat behind that grossing out at 23,600 lbs. I wouldn't beleave it with a 3.71 gear unless I actually did it myself. and never over 3800 rpm. That is why when people just want to jack with the timing I think it is wasted effort and maybe a good way to burn valves.

Those that are so narrow minded in their thinking that just ignition timing changes are all that's necessary to proper tuning will always have driveability problems, poor results and breakage. Ignorance of the control system is a big problem, and most that do not understand it fully then attempt to apply broken logic to justify their thoughts about the control system and tuning. There's so much more to a good tune than just cranking up timing and leaning air/fuel, and there are very few in the country that understand proper tuning.
