So I am confused. Ford tells me to come in a get a new CPS. (the grey one I am assuming).Jody from DP tuner tells me there is a black one to get (which is our old one I am assuming) I have also heard from other websites that the black one is the one to get. So I am all confused. Which is the right CPS to get and use, and what is the right one for a backup?Does anyone have all the answers and what part numbers we are talking about here?
Yes the original one is black. The black ones work, but when they fail they completely shut down the engine. It became such a common thing that Ford issued a recall and redesigned the CPS.
The problem now is that the new CPS (grey) causes issues while the engine is running. Many people who have done the recall report a rougher idle and reduced mileage. On top of that, some trucks trip cylinder contribution codes. At first Ford didn't realize the problem, and some people had dealerships replace injectors, wiring harnesses, PCM's, IDM's, etc.... all on the customer's dime (none of this was warranty work) to try and figure out the cause of the cylinder contribution faults. You can imagine a few people were pissed to learn that the problems came from a recalled sensor, and that their engine/injectors/etc were all perfectly fine.
So, that's the issue at hand. Most people prefer how their trucks run with the black CPS, which is why you read on forums and websites where people are recommending to get a black CPS if possible. The black CPS either works or it doesn't, while the gray one only seems to work half-assed.
That thread includes what Jody told me about which black CPS works, as well as 2 different part numbers from International for the black CPS. The problem is, no one sells the black CPS anymore, unless you happen to find one at NAPA, etc. The problem with the NAPA or aftermarket ones is they are even worse than anything Ford or International offers. The new CPS part number from Ford ends in B. The old one ended in A.
The blue cps is from international. It was for the DT466 and worked well on 7.3's. They are no longer in production either. When Ford redesigned theirs, so did IH.
BTW. I found a black cps from international. The guy wants $100 bucks for it. Do ya'll think it's worth it?
That's the "old" original price before all the grey cps and recall stuff came to light. In fact, a $100 IH CPS is in the truck now and has been running for 3+ years now without any issues. Since they are no longer available, perhaps it's not such a bad investment at all.

After seeing how much better the black IH CPS performed in my truck (when I didn't think there was anything wrong with the gray one, I bought a couple of extra black ones from Jody when he could still get them.
If you end up with a gray one that causes a rough idle, then the $100 will be worth it. If Ford creates a replacement for the troubled gray CPS which ends up being even worse, it will be more than worth it.
If you decide you don't want it, at least PM the info to someone who's interested. If you don't want it, I know someone will.
Anybody else remember when there used to be at least a thread a month around here trying to muster support for demands that Ford do a recall on the black CPS?
Goes to prove the old adage you've got to be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.
