I know exactly what you are talking about. I got a fx4 with the center shifter and it didnt have the mp3 jack. So I had to buy a pie adapter. Then I had to get a 3.5 mm male and female cord. I took some measurments between the reverse sensor and cig lighter. I got a drill bit that was just a hair smaller than the female plug. Not real small but for a snug fit. From there I drilled in the center of the panel. I then pushed the plug in from the back. It works great never poped out or anything. It has a clean look cause the plug sits flush with the face of the panel. The only thing I didnt like when I was drilling through the plastic is that it chipped a real small piece. You cant notice it unless you really look at it. Other than that it looks good. I will try to get some pics up for you. It might not be till later though.
I really can't believe there isn't a good jack made thats designed to push into a hole of a certain size.....I thought about using that idea of just pushing the cord female end in tight....but wanted something more secure...
The only thing that is going to work for you Ryan is a panel mount, similar to what I linked to. I have never come upon a flush mount panel fixture. I will see if I can take a photo of a similar product, that I have at work (installed into some sheet metal).
Reading back, you say you want to keep the stock jack.... do you know how it is terminated behind the dash? How about the interface at the deck? I'd like to help you find a work around here, but I worry there might be signal loss if we simply use a jumper system.
My plan is to get another stock jack and solder the wires of a male end onto it...use that one in the upper location, get a y-adapter, plug it into the original in the dash and then use the y to go to both locations...
I guess i don't know why its so important for me to have both work.....other than i don't want a hole in the top.....and i'm kinda picky like that.....Plus i don't want anyone to plug something into it and it not work......lol...i guess it would be slightly easier to just not worry about the y....but thats the easy part...finding a suitable jack to mount in the dash is becoming the hard one
i found this jack on the net it may be better but i dont know how legit the dealer is, i have been trying to figure out the best way to add a mp3 jack to my truck and i have seen all the options i just dont know which one is the best way. i have the audiophile in dash 6 CD changer with sirius but i hate radio regardless id rather run my mp3 player or laptop to have my itunes library in my truck anybody got ideas?
