Hey guys, I have an early 99 f-250 with a 7.3l. My mods are an intake, straight exhaust, Edge Evo, gauges and a built trany. So my problem is that last weekend I was towing about 8,000 lbs for about 6 hrs straight and once I got home and left the truck running I noticed that my exhaust pinging nouse. So I popped the hood a killed the engine and as the turbine in the turbo was winding down it sounded like the bearings were going out. So its the stock turbo and has anyone heard of this or had this problem. My looking a aftermarket turbos and I would hate to pull money off of one of my other projects the by a new turbo but it would kick ***.
Welcome to FTE. You really need to ask this kind of thing down in our 99-03 7.3 diesel section. Lots of good info down there that's 7.3 diesel specific.
I'd start by pulling the intake hose and checking the shaft for play. Grab the wheel and wiggle. There should be a very slight side to side or up and down movement, and NO in and out play. The wheel should not be able to touch the housing at any point.
If you want to really wake the truck up, it's time to step away from the Edge. If you're from Texas, you'll want to talk to Tony Wildman at Total Diesel Performance. He can give you a custom chip that will run circles around the edge.
As for the turbo, what exactly are you looking for? If you're willing to change a few more parts, you can upgrade the turbo, plenums, housing, etc. to get the 99.5 larger pieces on there.
If you're going to upgrade, you should also consider a 4" or 5" turbo back exhaust. Just a straight pipe won't move enough air to keep your EGT's down.
Total Diesel Performance, cool, I'll check that out. I can see the Edge on ebay. Well if I have to spend $800-900 on a reman. turbo I might as well spend more money on some upgraded stuff or a whole new aftermarket turbo. My truck is mainly from towing now and I turn the Evo to the 80hp range for towing. But my biggest goal is to get the EGT's down then get mome power. Im on trans #3 and its a good one that I had custom made, and im starting to wonder that my junky Evo isn't doing my trans any good. Would a custom program from Tony be better on my trans? Thanks for your help!
I've heard the Edge bumps up the line pressure alot in the tranny and causes rough shifts. The best thing to do if your mechanically inclined is to install a shift kit. Both TransGo & Sonnax have one for less than $100. It basically involves changing out springs in the valve bodies to firm up your shifts and help the transmission last longer.
When you order a chip from TDP, Tony will ask you if you've done any modifications to your tranny, what the code is on your PCM, and what other mods you have done so he can write the tunes to match what you have in your truck. That's a whole lot better than the "one size fits all approach" and it costs about the same as the edge.
You can watch a video to give you an idea of what's involved in installing the shift kit here Ford Lincoln Mercury Reprogramming Kits (click on the 4R100 HD2 Tugger install video. Talk to Bill over at racerx (a sponsor here) to order your kit. Racer X Automotive
For the turbo upgrades, I'd suggest you starting a new thread down in the 7.3 section here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum31/ and ask what's involved in upgrading from the early 99 to 99.5. We have several members who have done it and can walk you through the process.
Any other turbo that you install (other than the stock replacment) will require that you change quite a few parts, including the intake spider, up-pipes, pedistal, etc. So a project like that ends up becoming more costly.
Chris has already covered the other basics for you on how to check your current turbo.
