2005 Oem Brake Control

Please Help,

My Oem Controller Will Only Work With The Manual Slide Bar. When You Hit The Brake Pedal, It Shows Power On The Controller But There Is No Power At The Trailer. I Have Tried This On Two Trailers Same Results. I Think I Need A Controller?

What do you have your gain set at? Try turning your gain up by hitting the + button so that you are at 7 or 8 and try it. If you have maxxed out your gain and are not locking up your trailer brakes before the truck does, you likely have a problem. May be in the wiring harness at the rear of the truck or could be the controller itself. Was the controller installed when you bought the truck? Was it original equipment or did someone add it? If it was added and they didn't change the master cylinder for your brakes it wouldn't function properly - most likely not at all so that wouldn't likely be the problem. Anyway, more info would help. Does the trailer icon show up in green when you are connected?

By the way, Welcome to FTE

How fast are you moving when you hit the brakes? If you're not moving 20 or 25 mph, the controller won't do much.

Good luck.

I HAVE GAIN ON 10. I ALSO HAVE THE FACTORY CONTROLLER. THE MANUAL SLIDE BAR LOCKS THE TRAILER BRAKES. WHEN I HIT THE FOOT BRAKE IT SHOWS POWER TO THE CONTROLLER BUT I DO NOT GET POWER AT THE TRAILER. I ALSO PUT A TEST LIGHT ON MY ON PLUG . I GOT HOT WHEN I PRESSED MANUAL SLIDE AND NOTHING WHEN I HIT THE BRAKE ON THE SAME TERMINAL. I ALSO PULLED MY TRAILER OVER 10 MPH AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED. YES TRAILER ICON IS GREEN.
THANKS FOR HELP.

Sounds like a problem with the interface from your brake pedal to the controller. That opens up a whole lot of things but could be the transducer on the master cylinder or brake activation switch That's the only thing I could find on this type of problem.

Also, you mentioned 10MPH, on earlier models you may need to be going about 20MPH before it kicks in from the brake pedal and that won't show when you are testing it standing still with a voltmeter. The manual slide works at any speed.

Just trying to help diagnose - I'm no expert in this area.

I'm not sure that's true. My normal habit pattern with a trailer attached was to get rolling and hit the slide to ensure the trailer brakes were good to go. When I hitched up to my 2005 for the first time, the slide did nothing despite the fact that the controller itself was showing voltage as I moved the slide. I took it up to 25 or so and it worked like a champ and has ever since. Maybe mine has issues too and I never knew it but when I did the procedure outlined in the owners manual it worked as advertised.

BRADP,

Take what I say with a grain of salt because I am absolutely no expert but I would recommend that you just go a little faster and try it. If it doesn't work at 25 mph then I would say that you do have a problem. My theory is that they designed it this way to keep the trailer from jerking the truck at slow speeds since you really don't need the trailer brakes so slow. However, once the threshold is crossed where the controller will apply the trailer brakes, it will keep them applied (commensurate with brake pedal pressure) until a complete stop. Some teenaged punk in a rice burner tested that one for me. He about got his backseat replaced by a Superduty bumper.

Let us know how it turns out.

if you want to test the theory in a shop, get some jackstands and lift your drive wheels...let them spin at 30mph or so and give the brakes a shot.

It may not be the brake controller that is not engaging the brakes at low speeds, it may simply be the brakes. If there is not enough speed at the drums, the friction from the magnets will not overcome the springs on the shoes.

Have you checked all of your fuses? It seems your sensors are all working since your TBC module is showing an output proportional to your pedal force. Maybe there is a separate fuse for the manual slider?
