Hey guys, I have an early 99 f-250 with a 7.3l. My mods are an intake, 4 inch straight exhaust, Edge Evo, gauges and a built trany. So my problem is that last weekend I was towing about 8,000 lbs for about 6 hrs straight and once I got home and left the truck running I noticed that my exhaust pinging nouse. So I popped the hood a killed the engine and as the turbine in the turbo was winding down it sounded like the bearings were going out. So its the stock turbo and has anyone heard of this or had this problem. My looking a aftermarket turbos and I would hate to pull money off of one of my other projects by paying for a new turbo but it would kick *** though.
check the wheel in the turbo by taking the intake tube off..if there is any in and out play..its junk..if no in and out but has up and down play..it can be rebuilt for around 125 bucks by going on ebay and looking for seller Ron's turbo...he also some times have early 99 turbo's all rebuilt for 6 to 700 bucks..a good tried and true after market turbo for the early 99 would be this one. Beans Diesel Performance - Early 1999 Power Stroke BDP Dominator 66 Turbo (Powered by CubeCart)
Fortunately, the stock turbo is rebuildable with a ~$100 kit from Ron's Turbo Service, as long as the housing isn't chewed up too much. And I'm also curious -- where in TX are you??
EDIT: Well damn. I'm 0 for 2 on turbo advice tonight. Didn't notice the "early 99" part. Are the early turbos rebuildable like the lates, Ron?
Ok, I finally got time to take a look at the turbo and the shaft doesn't have any play at all. As I rotated the turbine, on about every other turn is sounded like on of the fins on the turbine was coming in contact with the housing, ever so slightly though, just a grazing noise. I could only hear it and I didn't feal any resistance when I heard the noise. But before is checked out the turbo I had to move the truck and I didn't hear the noise from fhe turbo like before, maybe because it was cold. So me being the dumb *** that I am I remember to pull the codes and I got a P1211 (Injection Control Pressure Above/Below Desired.) What do yall think.
Oh by the way I live in New Caney, about 45 minute north of Houston.
if the wheel looks like it was hitting..i would run her to get the oil up to temp then check it for play..it is posable the oil was thick and its keeping it tight for now...be carefull grabbibg the wheel though..it does get very hot... 1211 you will get some times because you are asking for more power the HPOP can put out..guy's with chips see this code all the time...
Joe it is the same and pretty sure it even takes the same kit...
and the wheel size....the shaft and bearing are the same..not posative but i beleive when i talked to Ron over at Ron's turbo..this what he told me...been so long i cant swear to it..i was amazed he talked me out of his rebuilt turbo for early set up cause i could get a much better deal doing the swap at the time..it cost me as much as his new rebuilt tubo would have cost me..he said he would go that rout .i stopped thinking about early 99 turbo...
well yes..but then your moding..its no longer stock..yes exhaust side to..but im sure you could swap them wheels to if the shaft is the same...but why go smaller?? lol
Mine made the same kind of sound when it was dying. When it was cold I would hear a sound like you said "pinging" or "jingling" as I called it. It would only make 7 or 8 lbs of boost at WOT with a tuner. A rebuilt turbo from Ron's cured the sounds and the boost levels. I'm very happy with it.

I think if you can make a noise spinning the turbo by hand, it's either time for a rebuild or a new turbo. As Ron mentioned, the P1211 is a fairly common code on a truck with t a tuner.
So what is the difference from Beans Turbo and Rons turbo for the Early 99. Besides the price I know that Rons is damn near stock exept for the 1.00 housing.
