The Early '99 itch has struck again!!! Please help...

I've got an early '99 (MFD 07/98) F-350 and it is in very die-er need of the turbo Y-pipes replaced. I had heard about the upgrade kit that International makes with bellowed pipes and hardware, P/N# 1837872C93. The problem is, I was told that this kit will not work on my truck because the new pipes are about 1" longer then my factory ones, and the inlets on the turbo base casting are angled slightly different then my factory piece. I was also told that the early '99 turbo will not mount up to a late '99 turbo base casting. I have looked at both cast pieces, and the angles are different, however the mounting surface where the turbo is clamped on looks exactly the same to me. Aside from raising the turbo an inch, and having to slightly bend the new pipes to fit, will I have any problems installing this new kit on my truck? Has anybody installed this kit on an early '99 truck? Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. I would hate to have to resort back to factory junk, as the new parts are better designed AND cost less.

Have you thought about just upgrading to the late 99 turbo and swapping out the intake plenums while you swap the other pieces and just convert everything?

The base engine is the same -- many have upgraded to the late-99+ turbo setup. It takes up-pipes, collector, turbo, I/C pipes, intake spider, manifolds, and boots. I think I covered it all... Basically, everything between the exhaust manifolds & heads, besides the I/C itself. If you get a good deal on the turbo, there is a kit for like $1200, so you're looking at maybe $1500 to $2000ish, depending on the cost of the turbo. Some folks get lucky and happen across someone that has upgraded all their late stuff, and pass theirs on. Good luck!!

Well I was planning on upgrading 100%, aftermarket turbo, injectors etc.. But I'm flat broke and it would take too long for me to get all of the parts needed to complete the task, and I can't stand driving it the way it is now(no power, won't spool the turbo, ticks like CRAZY). I'm kinda squeezing this one out to get the problem fixed and prepare for later upgrades. I could just get the factory parts, but why pay the extra money for parts that aren't as good? I kinda feel like I got the run-around at the shop though, and from the looks of all the parts, I think I can make the kit work. But before I make a jerk out of myself, I wanted to make sure there wasn't anybody who has tried this kit on an early '99 and failed the attempt wasting 400 and some dollars on a box of new scrap metal.

I guess ANYTHING is possible, but shoehorning the late 99 bellowed up-pipes in an early is a stretch. Not saying you CAN'T, but it would be a hell of a piece of work!!

How about the exhaust manifolds.. Are they also different between early and late '99s? Or the exhaust flange on the turbo base?

Haha well that's just the thing... I've got a few parts for it already, but I want to wait to pull everything apart and do EVERYTHING in one shot. I'm a mechanic by trade, and got free reign to use my company's shop whenever needed. But I have learned (from my '68 highboy that will never be finished)that I don't have enough patience to continuously work on my own rigs when I can do things to them in big groups, ya know...

Having had to do this similar thing on my pre 99. Yes you can install the taller base and run bellow up pipes. You will need longer and some what offset couplers to go from the horn to the intake plenums. For me, the new turbo backing plate was shot and leaked a lot of oil, so I had to put the old smaller turbo back in place. I bought two 3" to 2" couplers to make it work while I waited on parts. Wasn't pretty but did work. I wouldn't want it long term that was as I am sure above 10psi or so it leaked air like crazy.

My observations to think about. Running taller pedistal also requires a longer shaft on the butterfly valve if you keeping it. If the new pedistal doesn't have an ebpv then you are fine. For me the existing IC pipes work just fine. I think you can make it work without any issues. Just be a few parts you would need that probably will not be used in final setup. Personally, I watched ebay for a while until I could get all the parts needed to do it all at once. Thats the way I'd recommend it as well. FWIW, the only difference in turbos is the size of the compressor housing, the later is much larger requiring a tall pedistal. The center and exhaust are the exact same.

do it all at once or not at all..bellow's do not fit on the early 99's..if you want to up grade and do it right you will need up pipes, babies butt, turbo, pedestal. spider, plenum's and boots for the spider to plenum's...if your low on cash..Ron's turbo on ebay has early 99 turbo's all rebuilt for around 700..but if i was you..i would save for the D66 turbo
http://www.beansdieselperformance.co.../prod_100.html
that turbo on a 97 with my sticks dyno'd 436HP...

on a side note...the babies but..(the Y pipe where pipes meet turbo) are the same size on both trucks..if you could get the babies butt for the 99.5 bellow pipes..you could fab up your own pipes with the bellows i linked below..but it would be a lot easer if the motor was out of the truck..

Thinking outside the box here.

Would it be possbile to buy the upgraded pipe kit. Cut them and take out a section of pipe? Reweld the flange back on and change any of the angles?

or reuse the turbo flange from the old pipes... a good welder should be able to weld that on the new pipe

just a thought
