I understand that the OBS 7.3 turbo has the same compressor wheel as my early 99 does. It also has a lot bigger exhaust housing that is non wastegated correct? If the pedestals are the same for an early 99 and an OBS truck, would an OBS turbo be a good mod for bigger sticks and big oil on my truck?
It isnt a direct swap due to the pedistal is differnt and the collector flange is diff. You can get a 1:15 housing for your early 99 and it will be like a obs but with a slightly smaller turbine wheel.
Your best bet for performance and ease of instalation would be a Dominator 66 for your early 99.
No the OBS turbo would not be any type of upgrade for you. It suffers from the same thrust bearing issues as a SD turbo will. And it won't flow any more air. Like Bean said your best will be a D66 turbo from him. many OBS guys running the D66 now and absolutely love it! Also depends on how much fuel you plan to do with. Anything over 180cc and your getting close to being over its effectiveness and you need to look at other turbo's like an H2E
The SD pedestal and Garret GTP38R turbo is the way to go, scratch the D66 IMO. It uses the same stock center section your turbo has now so you wont have any more relability now then before, other then the fact that the turbo company who builds the D66 has set it up somewhat to help reduce un-equal drive pressures. If I was you I'd do the SD pedestal and the Garret BB charger from BDP. Good luck
I am planning on going to 160 cc singles and having Jody do the programming. Would the Dominator 66 be a good option for that along with big oil? I am trying to get somewhere in the 450 hp range. Also just for kicks, does anyone have the turbine and compressor housing sizes for early 99, late 99 and up and OBS turbos that they could post?
The D66 is a nice turbo, I run one and dont have any real issues with it. Its about maxed out right now with stage 2's so an H2E upgrade is in order. I think the BB Garret charger is a nice one, its center section is a heckl of alot better then the POS thrust bearing unit the OBS and early 99's run. Either way If I was you I'd buy from BDP for your sticks, oil, tunes, and turbo
I like the dominator 66 more and more. What are the housing sizes and does it have a wastegate or not? Does anyone have a pic of it installed or uninstalled?
The Dominator looks just like your stock turbo does. The only way to tell is to take one apart. Mine came with 1.10AR housing. The early '99 D66 is wastegated. Its built off a stock early '99 turbo so everything external is the same as factory.
So the only difference is the exhaust housing is larger and the bearings are of a different design? Is it possible to get the parts to basically take my stock one and build one?
Geez Steve, just stop talkin for a minute before you confuse the guy beyond repair.
The D66 will come with a 1.0 Wastegated housing. The 1.10 that Steve reffered too is the compressor side ratio and has nothing to do with what we are dealing with here.
The 94-97 has a nonwastgated 1:15 turbine
all 99-03's have a .84 waste gated housing
If you want 450hp you will need more then 160cc injs. 160's with nozzles will get you close to 400hp and sometimes a hair over. A D66 has enough air for 450hp no problem but I recomend it for fueling of 400hp or less. If you want 450hp I recommend a H2E kit since you would have just as much or more into doing a Garrett GTP38.

Your right, I mixed the compressor and exhaust housing numbers up. Im not perfect bro, if i was they'd crucify me
