On a cold start some people get an idle up and down and may even die. Some of the 15w40 is like molasses when cold. So the 5w40 synthetic is going to give better flow during a cold start.

so shaffers 9000 is good but this rotela 5-40, has anyone checked metals/sample to see if during warmer weather it still protects well?during winter i would for sure use it.
solid evedence on how they treat our engines in warmer weather would change my mind i think. id rather thicker oil maybe a search would yeild older tests, but a new fully synthetic super oil would be cool.

I swapped in some royal purple in the Harley and 300 miles later, blew the front jug, coincidence? I dont know, but I'm not using it again, at least not on the bike. My opinion, thats all.

This is romps: YouTube - Powerstroke 7.3 Cold start #2

this is an especially bad case of the romps. On a healthy truck at cold startup, with conventional oil, you only get a few romps, 2 or 3, maybe 4, and the idle will smooth out.

When switching to synth oil, do you recommend changing the oil in the hpop or just let it cycle through? If so, how do you empty the hpop.

Thanks all,

Yes, i would suck it out... I suck the HPOP on every oil change.. I use a hand pump, the Liquivac.. see their website:
Liquivac
It great for marine engines and lawn movers too..

That is exactly what my 7.3 sounded like on a 25 F day with rotella dino oil. I changed to 5w40 Rotella full syn,, and never heard it again.

HOLY CRAP! I hope my truck NEVER sounds like that. That is scary! Doesn't that hurt the engine in any way?

It CAN'T be good!! If you ever put a sample of 5-40 syn & 15-40 dino in the freezer or outside, if it's cold where you're at, you see why it does that. Like pumping cold molasses though the engine. I switched after my first OC, and won't ever go back.

I priced RP 15W-40 syn today at O'Reilly's, and DAYAM, they're PROUD of that stuff!! Like $32/gal!! Wow!!!

Rotella is finally going back down in price too. Wally world sells it for 19.99 and autozone for a penny more.

It definately makes a difference in starting. Mine fired up right away on new years morning. It was 15 degrees, not plugged in, and all I did was wait for the WTS light to go out. She did make a bit of smoke but only for a minute or so. Schaffers 9000 is going in once I run out of the Rotella I have stocked up.
