Yeah, I invested in the synthetic at the last oil change, then the alternator/GPR went the next day. Not sure which. I guess the alternator was already worn out. Then the ECM went. So of course, it's the oil right?

Yeah, has to be. Seriously though, some folks will read this and think that is the deal.

How is the synthetic treating you?

Sign me up!

No more romps with 5w40 syn rotella. Smoother drive away.

What was really interesting was after I changed the oil I started the engine to check the filter for leaks as I would normally do. After about 1 minute of running the engine noticably smoothed out. I almost could not believe what I was hearing. It actually made a noticable change while I watched.

So for me in my diesel truck it is Syn Rotella.

Don't really have a report yet as the problems aren't fully resolved yet. I didn't notice a huge difference. I wanted to see if there was a mileage difference but with resetting the trip when the power was disconnected I don't know that yet either. Seems to be better, but I got to get it running right first. Might have the ECM today...

I think even though I may not have had any symptomatic changes, the overall improvment in change interval and quality will be an improvement.

I hesitated switching to synthetic..mostly because I had heard that the thinner viscosity could lead to new oil leaks in higher mileage engines.

I switched, and I haven't had a single problem. Truck loves it. Even in cold cold Iowa, the truck hasn't romped once.

Any reason to choose the 5w-40 and not the 15w-40? Just asking because I think walmart sells it slightly cheaper than the 5w-40, and in 2.5 gallon bottles.

Shell Rotella in synthetic for diesels is not available in 15W40, only 5W40
Shell Rotella in dino for diesels is not available in 5W40, only 15W40

Schaeffer's has a dino diesel oil 15W40
Schaeffer's synthetic blend diesel oil is 15W40
Schaeffer's fully synthetic diesel oil is 5W40

Basically, if it's 5W40 we're talking fully synthetic. 15W40 is dino oil typically, but Schaeffer's does make that blend. Nice thing about diesel engine oil... there's not too many to choose from, not like for a gasser. Are there other diesel engine oils? SURE!! But you'd be hard pressed to find them, and then to get feedback on them. Unless you're talking about the big CAT or Detroit Diesel engines, but you won't be finding them under the hood of a PSD.

There are a couple 15W40 syns out there, but I can't remember who makes it. Might be Royal Purple, actually....

Switching to 5-40 syn

First post after getting lots of great info from this site!

When switching to synth oil, do you recommend changing the oil in the hpop or just let it cycle through? If so, how do you empty the hpop.

Thanks all,

Tab

No comment on the RP, but I used the Amsoil DEO 5w40 for about 13K miles and was not pleased with how the wear metals started escalating at the end. I switched to the Schaeffer's 9000 series 5w40 and have not seen the same escalation in metals, so I'm sticking with it. Furthermore, the DEO was much more expensive than the Schaeffers.
