I decided to purchase a rebuilt tranny for my '97 2.3 4cly ranger. The truck is a 2wd, I was going to rebuild the tranny myself. but I just purchased a rebuilt tranny for a 4wd 2.3 4cly so I could for now have hi and lo.
Please look at the pics of the t-case that I picked up at the local salvage yard and help me get what I need. It looks like the t-case has a place for a vent hose, I can route that. It also has two holes, you can see in the pic, one I think is for the speedo sensor, what is the other?
my guess would be maybe a tranny cooler hose but... if that was the case then it would need a return witch i suspect the other hole is for really but then again im just guessing as i dont know about rangers 4x4s
actually see the little bolted up one now im not sure yet again it might be for gear oil but it also might be for the return on the tranny cooler but like i said no sure
your best bet is to find a porduct number on it and look it up online ( but you probaly already tryed that) so maybe get a haynse or chiltoins book for the 4x4 model
I also would like to know how long is the rear drive shaft for a regular cab short bed ranger 4wd with a manual tranny. the guy at the local salvage yard gave me what "he thinks" is the right shaft. Here is the picture. it is about 38 inches long with the splined joint about half way out.
My truck is at my dad's garage about 2 hours away from my home so I can't go see if it will fit. I'm trying to get the right parts before the weekend.

i'm pretty sure that there isn't a tranny cooler for the manual. but thanks for reminding my to look at my haynes manual. I think that i acually kept it with me instead of leaving it at my dad's
ya good point hahah totaly didnt bother to ask if it was auto or stick and it didnt even click that you said " your where gonna rebuild it " but your welcome maybe more tranny oranted guys will help you better than me but i better watch my tounge some people think im on here to "ford bash"
the other hole that i'm talking about is the hole next to the wire that is sticking out. I beleive the speedo sensor is the hole that is closest to the output flange
alright, the other hole that i didn't know what it was. It must be the hole for the magnetic sensor that tells the control module what position the the t-case is in.
