Well, I've always been a wrench turner and a computer guy at the same time. Odd combination, huh? Back in the late 90s after FTE got started I connected with a guy in the programming business who sold Superchips products. I learned a lot from him while he sold chips on the site, but the relationship didn't last long (company is out of business). I ended up connecting with the folks at Superchips, and later, Diablosport followed by SCT. I've played around with most of the Ford tuning packages (and up and coming package is HP Tuners).
Through Motorhaven I ended up selling thousands of tuners and chips, via mail order and locally. It took some time to hone my skills with custom tuning, and I spent a lot of time tuning my own and friends vehicles with lots of data logging. The only thing I didn't like tuning via mail order is custom superchargers and some of the wilder builds - they really need dyno time for a proper tune. I have data logging equipment, a couple of wide band O2 sensors, etc. plus the full SCT software suite (all Ford and GM vehicles).
Right now I'm running Mike Troyer's tunes in my F150, the guy is good at Roushchargers and we talk a lot about tuning - great guy. I don't have the dyno facilities to do it myself, unless I wanted to spend way too many hours to get a Roushcharger tune "right" for one vehicle whereas he has been able to spend years tuning many Roushcharger F150s. I do occasionally load my own tunes into the vehicle, mostly for data logging what the tranny is doing.
For the F250, well, I was running DP-Tuner's mileage tune it in. After Ford updated the FICM without my knowledge and I ended up getting it updated back to a better a FICM code DP's tune is horrible during cold starts below 40 degrees. The idle goes up and down, cylinder mis-firing, etc. and it takes forever to warm up. Its not a problem with DP's tunes, just a mismatch between it and the new FICM code. So, I made my own mileage tune for it rather than bugging DP about it (besides, I enjoy it), and fixed the startup condition as well. I'm getting about 19-20 mpg on the highway if I keep it under 65 mph.
For the Ranger, that's the ultimate in mileage tuning here. My daughter drives it to college and isn't a speed maniac so I sacrificed power in order to keep her fuel economy good.
Very interesting, Ken. I've been thinking about playing with tunes as well. Too bad Sheldy lives so far away!! But on the other hand, I have Tony practically in my back yard, so it's tough to justify investing in all that gear when Tony is right here and can so much so easily. My truck also gets 19-20 keeping the take-offs mellow and speed-O below 65. My last "mileage run" I got 575 miles off my 30 gal tank. I wanted to make it to 20, but I had a couple punks mess with me, so I nailed pretty hard near the end of the tank. lol....
BTW, I was going to say something about the sig as well, but figured I stirred the pot enough. I will say this since it's been brought up: No matter how you justify it, "Do as I say, not as I do" doesn't buy you a lot of respect from some people (me included). Sorry, that's how I see it. I've had nothing but positive comments on my sig, even with the "distracting loud fonts and images". I think it's tastefully done, and others think the same way from the feedback I've gotten.
What you don't like other people's bodily fluids? You're no fun.
It depends on how I'm getting 'em....

They're sweet, for sure! I've tossed around getting a A4 but the thing that keeps me away is the repair costs.... I tend to break things! But boy do I have fun doing it!!

Yet... below you stir it.

Employees get discounts from their employers. The guy who puts in extra effort and time often gets a parking space up closest to the building. The guy responsible for managing several employees gets a bigger office. Cops often get to drive their employee vehicles to and from work instead of putting miles on their personal vehicle. Veterans get government benefits non-vets don't get. Volunteers are charitable events often get access to the event for free.
I don't have a problem with people who put in a lot of extra time and effort in a position which is more apt to receive complaints than thanks (human nature) receving extra perks. Apparently you do, sadly. Why begrudge people who put in the time their minor perks? I'm happy to give mods perks!

I saw this 60 minutes one time where they took a black light and other types of forensic tools into various hotel rooms. I have to say I am not easily sickened, but it was nasty. Just about every type of bodily fluid, in just about every square inch of those rooms. I mean, I know those media shows are sensationalized, but it was enough to make you think about it a little bit.
