Does anyone know if you can replace JUST the solenoid? Or, the only way to get it is by purchasing the IPR? I broke the connector on the solenoid while replacing the oil line fitting. I bought a new IPR but only slid the new solenoid on the old IPR. (I have no way of fabricating that fancy tool!!) Truck fired right up.

Yes you can just replace the solenoid without hurting anything. You can also use a deep socket without having to fabricate a tool. NAPA sells a deep socket that works just fine. So do many other places.
Resurrecting this helpful thread. I just replaced my Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) which I purchased from Amazon, Motorcraft brand for $165. Ouch.
A guy posted a video in which he shows a 29mm deep impact socket you can use for this job with any flexible 3/8 wrench and a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter. It can be had at O'Reilly's or Amazon (
I didn't wanna wait so I went to Home Depot and got a 12-point non-impact 29mm for $7.45 and it worked great. Its long enough to fit over the IPR after you remove the skinny tinnermen nut, metal spacer and the solenoid.
It took me a while to figure out why in the hell I couldn't get the 12 point socket onto the IPR and its because there is thin metal fuel? line that you have to push against to flex out of the way of the socket so it can go in straight.
Aside from having to empty the fuel bowl of diesel, its a relatively easy job.
This guy just used a 29mm boxed wrench. That's the one size I didnt have in my box and they didnt have at HomeDepot.
