Newbie transmission question

Hey all. New to the Superduty owners! Here is what I have. Late model 1999 f350 sclb dually 4x4 with 50,000km. Automatic with 3:73 gears. It has the diablo predator programmer and I have run it with the 85 horse and the 60 horse tune. The question I have is this. It seems that when shifting from 3-4 that it is a large jump in gears. Like the power falls out a bit. I do not believe the tranny is slipping at all. This happens while empty. It feels more like a lag. Is this normal shifting on these trucks? It doesn’t seem to smoothen out a bit the more rpms you have. I am new to this truck so just curious. Here is a picture. Bad picture though.

Nice truck and welcome to FTE!!

Have you tried driving it without the programmer on? I know mine shifts a little hard going into 3-4 if my rpms are just right.

I don't know how familiar you are with 1 ton trucks but they do tend to have a hard/ firm shift.

Welcome to FTE.

First what’s normal for these trucks is irrelevant since you have a chip. The chip overrides the stock shift points so it’s most likely the chip giving you the hard shifts. The only way to know is pulling the chip and driving the truck. If the chip has a stock setting you can switch to that also. Great looking rig.

I run a TS6 chip on an E99.

I'm in the 70 hp click generally. It changes the points radically. When it goes from 3-4 and your accelerating it will break your neck or spill your "pop".

This in stock mode retards the shift point back to normal and acceptable.

What I do is use my ear and wait for certain revs/signs that it will leap and slightly decel and it's smooth instead of the punch.

I have the tugger kit after the rebuild at 110k and I'm at 230ish now. All is good.

I'm thinkin it's the chip. As stated above, Shmoke it to stock mode and pay attention. Be prepared for a rebuild at 100-140k. Not because of the chip, but that's generally what I see here in terms of longevity. Well worth the effort by the way. For what I put it thru, (mine isn't a beauty queen like yours). Plowing, off-road drinks. Couple of mailboxes with one eye............(brush-guard and winch) LOL

Give it an eyeball.

Denny

Agreed with above, tunes will change the shifting simply with different engine behavior, aside from any intentional tune on the trans. I had a harsh 3-4 shift on a particular hill near my house. The specific combined road speed, go pedal state and RPM were the problem. But switch from Daily Driver to Race tune and problem solved.

But anyway, yeah they do that. Good looking truck and welcome to FTE!

Don't think the OP is concerned with hard shifting. More so though, the lack of power between 3-4.
OP, its apples to pears but, mine being a manual, i know what you mean. Shifting from 2-3, (L,1,2,3,4,5) 3rd gears loses ALOT of power IF im not high in rpms and successfully pull off a quick shift. If trailer in tow, forgetaboutit...found the cure to all when i went to 4.10 gearing

OP, nice truck and welcome. Here are the words from a reputable trans builder he told me. The tuning on these "tuners" does not address the trans properly simply because most tuners do not understand the 4R100. That is most likely your issue. Like the others good dudes suggested, try it without the tuner, and if that is the issue, get better tuning. My last auto truck would do the same between 3rd and 4th if I was really getting on it simply because the tuning was not addressing the trans, only the injectors and other stuff.

Thanks all. My plan was to go back to stock tune and test the issue. Just thought I might get the easy answer that it is the same in stock or tuned. So if it the tune, here is the million dollar question that I am sure there are a million answers too. What is the best tuner for addressing the transmission?

Probably the tuner making it shift too early, possibly with the torque converter locked which would bog it down. What's the RPM before & after the shift and at what speed? I know the speed will be different depending on acceleration, just pick one as an example.
