Starts when cold, but not when hot - SOLVED

Well boys you have heard this before, engine starts when cold, but not when hot, just cranks without firing off.

Talked with Ford dealer diesel mechanic about issue, and then OK'ed them to spend one hour to evaluate, at $95/hour.

Dealer write up: Inspected fuel pressure because customer stated it wasn't getting any fuel, found fuel pressure at 48psi. Test drive and found boost went to 15.40psi and ICP went to almost 2500psi. Got back to shop and vehicle was running a little rough. Performed cylinder contribution test pass. Shut vehicle off then won't restart. Found ICP at 320max psi with hot engine. Need more time to test ICP system and find pressure problem or leak.

I took this info and did some reading on this forum. Found most guys had history of this issue and were successful at resolving issue by replaced IPR o-rings.

So that's what I did. Issue resolved.

Note; see pictures I took during the operation. O-ring kit from Ford dealer consisted of two o-rings, both green, one small and one large, and a third o-ring if you want to call it that, is a split backup o-ring. The smaller green o-ring and split backup o-ring sit side by side. Location of green o-ring failure took place at backup o-ring split. The backup o-ring is split intentionally, because it is not a soft rubber, but hard dark plastic material. Also, cleaned out fuel filter housing, its small pass through side screen and screen element.

Tools to remove IPR, box end wrench size 1-1/8. And, three water bottles with tops cut off at 45' angle, used to collect oil that drains out of IPR port on rear of HPOP.

Truck '95 F250, 167,000 miles, 7.3L PSD, automatic.

Thank you all for the help.

Nice job!

Have you checked your fuel pressure again since cleaning everything out? If it's still below 50psi you might want to do a FPR shim on it.

05 same problem

Hey guys. I just bought an 05 F350 and have the same issue. Wondering if the thread above would also apply to my 05 350 with the 6.0 TD. Cold start no problem but once warm not enough power to turn over. Replaced 1 battery and alternator and still have the problem.

Thoughts?

More than likely not the same problem. Probably a High pressure oil pump problem. Need a scan tool to check. Needs at least 500 psi to fire the injectors.

If I were you though, I would go to the 6.0 part of the forum, and start a new thread. You will get more responses there. This is the 7.3 forum, 7.3 is a different animal than the 6.0.
