I read in ForemanES's reply how his grey CPS "only hiccupped once". What do you mean by hiccup? My '97 PS has recently in the last few days hiccupped while pulling away from a light or up a hill (is there such a a thing as a load on an empty 7.3L PS?). Having no clue as to what may be causing this, I searched for "hiccup". Anyway, can the CPS fail intermittently like this?

yup...get ready to replace...If you have not had the recall done yet go to the dealer and have it done for free......but pick up an extra to throw in the glovebox
mine hiccuped twice then a mile down the road I was calling for tools
Ron, Thanks for the advice. When I bought the truck, a friend was a service manager at a dealership, he checked the VIN and all the service and recalls had been performed (which is why I flew 1600 miles to buy it on ebay)
Does anyone know the recall number or whatever it is to have the dealer check? Sometimes it's helpful to know exactly what you're looking for when you come in.
Ok, I'll answer that one myself. Went to: Recall Information - Ford
entered my info and found:
Recall: 07S57
Description: CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR INSPECTION / REPLACEMENT
If you are looking at the front of your block. It will be in about the 10 o'clock position from the crank pulley. It is best accessed from under the truck. It will take a 10 mm and a short extension w/ratchet to get it off. I use a 1/4" drive ratchet and a deep well socket. You may need a screwdriver to pry it out after you remove the hold down bolt.
Clean the contacts on the plug and replace.
Takes maybe 10 minutes.
